AFR Readings, what should they be??????
#1
Just installed the Dawes AFR meter, what should the readings be please?
When driving normally, they change up and down the range and then go off altogether for a while, then change up and down the range again and go off again and so on.
When on the motorway, I open the car up at WOT the meter goes RED for a few seconds then goes off, so I eased off the throttle, I did the same again and the same thing happened.
From what I understand the AFR only gives accurate readings at WOT, this being the case, Is my car running lean at WOT.
My car is a MY00 no boost mods yet, thought I would fit the AFR meter first, so Its standard apart from JR Panel filter, decat centre section and scorpion b/b
Wired the meter up direct to battery with in line fuse, used crimped joint on ECU wire, could it be a faulty connection to the ECU, or not that simple
Thanks in advance Steven

Just saw your other 'wiring' thread (here) - this may be useful, may not be.
I don't have a Dawes AFR so don't know what its colours mean, but... at cruise, the AFR will most likely be going up & down the range. This is the ECU hunting for a stoichometric mixture to make sure the cat is doing it's job & give the best (ha!) fuel economy (). At WOT, it should then go to (and pretty much hold) a very rich mixture - should at least be 'rich' (depends on boost, really). If 'red' means rich on the Dawes, then yours is doing everything right! I think...

Sounds like you have a faulty connection into the ECU.
The lights go:
Blue Very Rich
Green Rich
Amber Just Right
Red Lean
I have upped the boost on my MY97 to just under fuel cut and am getting Blue on WOT in 3rd / 4th and Blue/Green on WOT in 5th.

I know theres conflicting views on this, but as I see it the lambda sensor gives out a voltage to the ECU, the ECU references this to its ground point- i.e. the ECU earth. So if you wish to read the volts its giving out, I'd reference it to the ECU ground, not the battery ground. Theoretically it should be the same, but in practice it will probably drift. Since the difference between the red light and blue light is only tens of milliVolts this drift could well be the difference.
So (IMO and how I wired my AFR-not a Dawes though)
Reference your meter to the ECU earth (not the ECU cover either - find a wire)
Solder do not crimp all connections
twist the wires running to the AFR meter
