Would I be correct in saying that the square black box to the left of the filter is the MAF?

So which bit is the plenum?? Where the throttle cable is attached or where the jubilee clips are??

Edited to say "bejysus, my 1st picture upload and it WORKED Whey HEY"
Cheers

Anyone give me a clue???

1992 Legacy turbo saloon. HKS air ind kit.

Initially from cold revs hold at just over 1k and settle to just below.

After driving for a few minutes, when approaching junctions etc etc. dip the clutch and as I'm about to stop the revs drop to almost noting then jump to 1200 ish then back down and up again.....

I've pulled over and this continues to happen. On the odd occassion it does settle at the correct 900rpm or so.

I've had a quick look under the bonnet for the tell tail 'lead/pipe hanging off, but nothing.

Is there anything simple I could check???

Any suggestions VERY VERY welcome

Thanks in advance guys

Phil

mine is doing exactly the same my00 p1.not sure but i suspect the idle control valve on top of plenum.dont know if ur model is the same.
it might be that the motor is sticking or the valve is gunked up and sticking..mine only does it when cold as soon as warm no prob.

I have noticed that the harder you push the car, when you come to a standstill the more the noticeable the revs drop and rise and occasionally stalls.??

Drove to work this morning and for the first 3-4 miles out of my 5 mile journey, it seemed fine!!

.......... then it all came back......Sh*te

I've added some Octane boost to knock off one option...(Sh*t Petrol)

My 99MY Impreza was doing this and I thought MAF or idle control.
Turned out to be dodgy 02 sensor, replaced under extended warranty

phil just replace my idle control and car still doing the same so no luck there
maf=mass air flow sensor sits after air filter monitors the intake air.
plenum=where ur throttle cable attatches and ur intercooler.
02 sensor=sits in your exhaust downpipe
looks like next things to check ar 02 sensor and maf sensor..

It was fine going there..... parked up and moved on to another place (along the coast) and damn it it was bust!!

Thought there may be some relevance........ clasping at straws in desperation!!!

Without wishing to rain on your parade, the quickest and easiest fix for this is going to be to see a subaru approved mechanic. They will simply jack an ECU monitor into the car, drive it, and look at which sensor is giving a rogue output.

You can them pay them for their time, and fic it yourself at half the cost
Shoudln't take more than an hour of their time...so £50?

Alternatively, you can dig out your multimeter, and start measuring outputs of stuff.

My personal suggestion is that it is your O2 sensor, as the problem only occurs when the car is warm. If this is the case, driving it at steady revs (but off boost) it may seem a little lumpy and hesitant as the ECU dials up and down the mixture trying to get it right. If you suspect it is the idle control valve....wait for the problem to start and then unplug the valve. The valve will lock in that position, and the revs should freeze.

Can I also check you guys have not just fitted dump valves?
Subarus will sometimes stall if you come to slow stop after 'giving it some beans' if their is a leak into the air intake AFTER the MAF (e.g. where you blocked the re-circ pipe).

Just suggestions....feel free to tell me to get lost.

One other thing that I have noticed, is that when you ease of the gas, with the slightest of pressure (Litterally lift my foot off the pedal completely)
The dump valve will sound as it should if there is sufficient pressure build up, but there seems to bee a 'little whistle/chirp' more a slight whistle. Almost as if it is the last of the pressure being pushed out 'last breath'.
