Question

Hi all

I'm occasionally getting (once a fortnight) the CEL come on when driving in low revs. It comes on for about 1 minute then goes.
Gives code 22 for Knock sensor. Does this mean the sensor is faulty or is there a prob with the engine.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

According to this nice guy's website:
http://www.geocities.com/subman2001nz/reading_ecu_codes.html
it is the following:

22 = Knock sensor
Error Description = Abnormal voltage produced in knock sensor monitor circuit
ECU's built in Fail-Safe Operation = Sets in regular fuel map and retards ignition timing

Sitll wandering though if its a faulty senor causing this or something the senor is picking up.

Proverbly a faulty sensor. Try titening the bolt and see if its slack. That could be the reason for it coming on and off. Be carefull not to over tighten, there not that strong and you may damage the crystal inside. If its tight, replace it and be sure youve conquered the problem.

Unhappy

Hi Skassa

After spending a bit of time out in the freezing cold this afternoon.
I found i didn't have an extension bar long enough to reach although i could get a spanner in underneath everything and just get it on but not enough really to get any purchase on it couldnt tighten any more but then again couldn't undo. Just no room to work so i will need to get a longer extension.
Sorry i couldnt be of more help but if you have any joy let me know.

Hi Pete.
i will just order a new one tommorow and hope that will fix it!.
Today there has been no trooble!.
It seem as it is a foulty sensor, becourse it can come on for 5 sec and then disapear.
On mine it is mostly when the car is cold , but sometimes it does it when warm.
When i connect my link ecu i see no diff in knock noise?????.

Hope the new sensor fix it.

What MY is you car

Several early MY WRX owners, myself included, have intermittent code 22 (knock sensor) issues
Sorry don't have links to the threads
Mine still comes on occasionally, usually when driving gently, or easing off after a mild blast, or just after leaving a petrol station, or reversing into a parking bay

Seesm to the ECU deciding to tell you it noticed a knock sensor problem recently, and since you're not driving hard now is a good time to tell you !

Doesn't normally cause me a problem, except in the few cases when it came on during hard acceleration, and decided to reduce the advance, leading to the car 'holding back'

Will probably change my knock sensor in due course

Hi Stephen

MY95 UK Turbo 2000

Generally comes on in lower rev range when wither going up or down a slight incline as opposed to a hill.

Spoke to a mechanic from local dealer and he said it could be dirt on the sensor might just need a clean.
