Question

I have picked up an annoying tick (no not on me but the car)..

Only hear it at tickover and sounds like a tappet.. I hoped an oil change would remove it but after replacing with Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W50 it still ticks..

Should I be worried about it?

Car is MY96 UK Turbo wagon.. with 110k miles on the clock.

Thanks for any help

I've got Motul in mine (MY93 WRX) and i think that it maybe be a bit quieter when warm but not when cold (i.e starting first thing in the morning).

Wink

I am going to just take it as one of those noises then..

I am sure it will last as long as the rest of the engine before causing me a problem..

Then make way for an STi engine??

Exclamation

Lads,

I find the same thing - when cold I hear it much more - not majorly loud but can hear it.

However, when it gets warm it gets quieter much quieter.

Wondering too - the cost, labout or difficulty in sorting this out. Is it bad or detrimental to the car?

Regards

Johny.

In my situation I know its not the Injectors and its not the Boost Valve either, its definately Cam followers (Tappets). With four Cams I reckon it would be a tad expensive as they would probably be about £10 per follower and then theres the labour. I can hear mine from inside the car! Just for a laugh im gonna get prices from a couple of Garages, I can gaurentee ****ty pants when he tells me that its 2K or summin. Lol

On my car I had the same problem and my ticking was coming from the left hand side of the engine bay. Get your head down to the engine and try and locate the tick. If its from the little cylindrical object on the inner wing suspension top its your boost solenoid. Nothing to worry about. You can change it if you want but with age it will happen again. If its not to loud then just leave it until you start loosing boost then change it!!!

Thumbs up

It's you boost solenoid clicking away, nothing to worry about. If you start your engine and pop the bonnet and listen on the left hand side of the bay you will hear it ticking when you rev the car slightly. It will also tick less as the car heats up.

Mine is from the head on the right of the engine, put some Wynnes tappet fluid in from Halfords, changed the oil and it's a lot better than it was. There was another thread about this a few months ago, I'll try and find it if I can

Found it

Sorry... cannot access Scoobynet from work anymore.. I think my access must have shown up on the log or something but the firewall has banned Scoobynet!! time for a new job..

Above link clickable www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?ThreadID=135797

I shall check mine as it is from the left hand side and only hear it outside the car.. Sounded more like the tappets but could be the boost solinoid etc..

So does this addictivre just go in the oil? need to be careful what addictives you put in a Turbo car due to the heat..

Thanks
