Question

Probably a silly question, but is it possible to change the 5th gear on me car to one of a different ratio - currently it is 20mph/1000rpm - would like something like a 23mph/1000rpm.

Any comments appreciated - preferably about the gear ratios....

Cheers

Paul

Check the previous weeks threads in drivetrain. JohnFelstead has just done the same... but in reverse. I believe you have a .825 5th. To achieve 23mph/1000rpm you will need .738.

I stand to be corrected

A .738 5th will give 21.8 per k with 4.444 C/W & P

Close but no Cigar

The three available from Subaru are .814, .825, ,738.

Then there are three crownwheel & pinions to play with, 4.444, 4.11, 3.9.

If you go to http://www.vmar.com/java/gear.html

You can enter the various options, and compare in gear speeds.

Cool

It depends what ratios you have at present and to identify these the exact car model etc is required.
If you are on .738 5th then your options are diff change to 4.11 or 3.9. Not as harendous as it may at first sound and this is what I did EVENTUALLY. If you want to talk it through and learn by my mistakes and probably save money give me a ring. 07860 302020.

Thanks for your input.

Hypoluxa - do you have a link/thread number for the John Felstead thread? - looked but can't find it - probably cos I'm thick!

Harvey, thanks, may contact you in the future.

Cheers

Paul

Paul

The posting was certainly in the last week or so, I can't remember the title of the thread or who started it (don't think it was John tho).

Johns car is a V5 RA V-ltd, these generally have a taller 5th than the standard RA's/Type R's. (3 out of 3 I've been in anyway). In my opinion it spoils the car.

Try mailing John, or post a thread in drivetrain
