Question

Hi,

Question for the gurus out there.

I've seen turbo "jackets" on some of these mad power Nissans and Toyotas, are they a good idea?

Sure, they'll allow the turbo to get up to optimum operating temp quicker and they'll keep underbonnet temps down a lot, but won't they cause the turbo to get too hot after a while, maybe damaging the bearings and the oil that lubricates them? I mean, Subaru had the foresight to blow cold air onto the turbo via the scoop, so it must be necessary to have some cooling. Also, we all know we have to run the engine after a blast to let the turbo cool down, surely a jacket will make it cool down slower, and hence may lead to damage unless the car is left to idle longer.

Having said all this, if the likes of Top Secret do it then it must have a benefit?

Cheers

Rich

Andy Forrest (Cossie Convert) had one on his RA (same turbo as yours) and thought it improved spool due to less energy being lost heating the turbo etc.

I'm happy to leave my heatshield in place, as it allows air to circulate around turbo, whilst halving the radiated heat from it.

I assume you are thinking in terms of bonnet vent removal etc?

Possibly get the later style heatshield that doesn't have the air feed from the scoop.

Rich,

I thought about the same idea, phoned the Garret distributers ( Garret won't speak to you themselves for some reason ) and they said that as long as its a quality item there should be no damage to the turbo.

But Garretts are pretty tough! Might not be quite the same for an IHI... although it might be
Aren't I helpful?

Rich

I tucked my turbo up in a blanket and lagged my uppipe and downpipe, although I didn't do any back to back dyno runs.....it's staying on

Looking forward to a dyno day on Sunday to see if the front entry TD05 was worthwhile (as if I don't already know )
