What can i do to get the car to boost consistently/ accurately with no boost spikes. I only just noticed this after plumbing in a boost guage. Surely these aren't too good for the engine.

Question

What kind of spikes are you talking about, which model do you have and what mods?

Ta,

Matt

I have a JDM STi7. Boost spikes relate to the boost offshooting targeted boost on acceleration, then settling back to the desired/preset levels. No mods as yet.

I stand under correction but I think it's pretty much designed to overboost initially for that extra bit of acceleration. One way to control it a bit better would be to fit an EBC.

I've noticed that I get a constance boost of about 1.05 to 1.1 with the dawes but it sometimes spikes for a split second up to almost 1.2. I would like to turn up the dawes to achieve a cold weather held 1.1-1.2 but would that mean these very brief spikes would trigger fuel cut or would the ECU be too slow to catch them?

Sorry if this is a bit of a hijack.

You don't need an EBC at all.

Have a look through here http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...ThreadID=80851

I takes about 4 seconds held continually a little over 1.2 bar to get fuel cut although your gauge may lie leading you to think it is slightly higher or lower.

So if boost spikes are built in from factory, they can be eliminated for a more consistant and safe boost.
How do EBC's help in the cause???

As PeteC says, go have a thorough read of the other thread. Messing with your restrictor sizes will help things somewhat. I find that 1.1mm is quite a good conservative setup for me, although you may want to try 1mm for slightly higher boost. This is with std exhaust & cat.

Pete (and Deep) has tried 1.2mm with a decat, which IIRC gives nothing more than a 1.2bar spike (down from 1.7bar).

Using an EBC to fix this spiking, is like using a sledgehammer to kill an ant. The ant will still die, but would you have wanted to pay 50 quid for the sledgehammer?

Cheers.

RT,

Except that an decent EBC setup properly can get you the best of both worlds, the spool up of the car in standard trim without the spiking.....
