My initial thought is TDC sensor, also known as crank position sensor. Cheap as chips to replace, thankfully.

I believe Pete Croney has mentioned that some pump can also cause this (was it water, Pete?)

Nick.

Water temp sensor can cause similar problems Nick, as the ECU thinks the engine is warm and doesn't activate the cold start routines.

Advice as ever in these situations is get it on a dignostic unit.

Might just be a one off, if you're lucky.

I used to get this in my old MY97. If I turned the key and let go before the engine started, it was a dog to get going. Took about 10 attempts. Anyways, I thought of it as a feature and tried not to slip off the key before hearing it purrr again.

I see you're still searching the boards for mentions of "Pete Croney" there Pete

Water temp sensor. Almost a pump then. I'll add that to my little knowledge.

If a mechanic is anywhere near the car, it will start perfectly. All rattles will disappear too.

More seriously, I had a problem with starting on a R19. Renault had it for 2 weeks and couldn't find a fault. They interrogated the ECU and found no error codes, so therefore the car had never failed to start... D'oh! Lucas Engineering in Warwick fixed it in under an hour after correctly diagnosing the problem.

Nick.

Wait 'til you go camping in the lake district, miles from anywhere after someone's spent two weeks "fixing" it.

It won't start then, bloody guaranteed

Yup - mine broke down on the road round Wast Water on Good Friday. Not sure what was 'Good' about that.....

Anyway, took two hours to walk to the phone next to the pub, as the mobile couldn't get a signal. Typical Orange, agreeing not to despoil a National Park! When I got back to the car, it started 1st time :0(.....

Unhappy

scooby-si,

I have this problem on my Uk98 too. Had it on a select monitor twice for a full check over and it always comes up o.k in both present and history files. Crank/Temp & throttle position sensors have all been suggested as the possible cause.

An ecu reset did eliminate the problem for a while. Problem is back again, although not so often. The only way it will start is flooring the throttle and then raising it gently and then there is a definate position where it starts.

I now just ‘live with it’ as I think each sensor is around the £100 mark and dont want to start guessing at it until I get it right!

Scooby-Si - same happened to mine. I tried the 'wait and see if it happens again' approach. Don't do it - get it in the garage. I got stranded miles from home and had to be fetched on a lorry... It was the Crank position sensor as the ecu had stored the code even tho' it was inetrmittent....
