Default Any gotchas to replacing sparkplug oil seals?

Hi All, I've got a non-turbo EJ20 Wagon, MY1999, and want to tackle the above as painlessly as possible and still have a working car at the end of it.... All advice welcome, thanks!

Do you mean rocker cover gaskets, or the gasket washer on the plug? You may get an answer if you're more specific

I'm assuming you have oil leaking into the spark plug holes from the rocker cover. If it's the same as the turbo engine you can't do the spark plug oil seals without taking the rocker covers off so you'll need the kit for doing each side. I'm not too familiar with the non turbo engine, ICP list the below kit for both Right hand and Left Hand rocker covers, interestingly they don't mention the half moon seals required for the back of the turbo rocker covers so may be a cheaper and easier job, is the non turbo 8 valve rather than 16 valve?

My advise is also to get ICP gasket sealer good stuff that.

Possible to do with engine in place, but would massively recommend getting a small torque wrench as those bolts can snap and you don't want that.

Thanks All! I should have explained that yes, I've got the kit as pictured X2, and it's to stop the sparkplug holes getting oil in. I was going to ask what torque to tighten thevalve cover bolts, but I've got a Haynes for the later models 2002 onwards, which says 44 inch pounds for non-turbo modes, so I'll go with that unless anyone knows differently. 👍

Default 6 months later....

Hi All, I really appreciate the advice I get from this forum, and would not have successfully changed the timing belt without it. I'd just like to ask here, as I've concerns about undoing the rocker cover bolts in order to change the spark plug seals. From what I've read on forums, snapping one of these bolts is a fairly common occurrence, so is it when undoing them or refitting them, and what precautions should I take to reduce the risk... for example, is it advisable to get the engine hot before undoing them? or is it best do it on a cold engine. Should I grease the bolts before refitting? I've already ordered new bolts in case the old ones might be weakened by years of heating/cooling, and am looking at buying a cycle torque wrench, that ranges from 2-25 NM
Thanks!

The MY01 EJ201 is similar to the EJ201 in your MY99 and 44inch lb quoted in the US Haynes manual is in the ball park of 3.6ftlb/5Nm quoted in the Subaru manual from MY01

You dont want a warm engine as you are likely to burn your arms !!

Regarding bolts - the lower ones are difficult to get at ; buy yourself a small ratchet spanner to get at them (I bought a cheap Amtech set because it had the smallest handle)

threebond 1215 as a sealant

This is the icp part I used on my MY00 wagon -- https://www.importcarparts.co.uk/par...75&searchPart=

A how to do it -- http://www.subaru-impreza.org/forum/...er-gasket.html

Did mine on my non turbo only few weeks ago, loads easier than my turbo, and didn't toque anything up.

Took under 30mins both sides. Well done on tracking the cambelt, I whipped out and got garage to do it.

Default A quick Q for Jaygsi...

Thanks for the encouragement, Jaygsi, can I ask you.. Did you bother with any mastic on the gasket.. or did you fit it dry (on the non-turbo classic)?

If it helps - I ran a very thin thread around the groove on the cover - probably not needed, but 'belt and braces', also helps to keep the gasket in place when you go the refit the cover ; none on the other surface
