Clutch Vibration (not Judder), DIY or No?
MY05 Impreza Wagon PPP
I recently had a clutch change at a so called 'Subaru Specialist', including the full oem Exedy kit and a second hand flywheel. Upon receiving the car back, I noticed a significant vibration coming through the clutch pedal. This happens whether the car is in neutral or in gear and increases in intensity with RPM. It can be felt during the free play of the pedal and when beginning to disengage the clutch, it cannot be felt between around half disengagement and fully disengaged.
When in neutral and the pedal is pushed in and out over a range of about 1 inch it almkst feels as if the pedal is shuddering in time with the RPM, as if the clutch fork/ thrust bearing is tilting against the pressure plate/ clutch, but this is just me trying to 'feel' for an explanation.
So firstly, can anyone confirm what this might be, flywheel unbalanced, something is misaligned, bad clutch, etc?
I have taken the car back to the garage and they are telling me it is nothing to do with the clutch or flywheel and could be the gearbox or the propshaft bearing?! Call me cynical but this was not present before the clutch change and I feel like I am being palmed off. They have said that any further labour will need to be paid for...
I have called Scoobyclinic and from my explanation they think it could be the flywheel or the bearing. I am considering taking it to them for an inspection to get a second opinion for more leverage with the original garage.
If I can't get the garage to work on the car under warranty, I am considering attempting this job myself as this type of situation is why I learned to work on cars in the first place!
Has anyone done the clutch/ flywheel themself and how hard is it to do on axle stands? I have no transmission jack as of yet but I assume I will need one, will I need to consider anything else?
Cheers guys.

All my senses are telling me that it is not right, as the revs increase it becomes a quite an intense vibration if you touch the pedal, it also seems to vibrate parts of the car which did not vibrate before. Maybe this part is me looking for it but I am 100% certain something is not right, I have driven many cars and never felt anything like this through the pedal.
I asked whether my flywheel wohld be skimmed and they said no, they are not meant to be skimmed and they will use a replacement....

I ‘ve had this problem and it’s properly irritating.
It’s like the clutch pedal has turned into an out of tune vibrator.
It’s worse in the free play part of the pedal travel and it stops you wanting to change gear, which is half the fun of driving the car.
I can’t exactly recall how mine was fixed but check that none of your clutch hydraulic pipes are touching or touching the bulkhead. I’m away atm but I’ll have a look to see if I can find any pointers to how mine was sorted when I get back if you’ve not found the cause beforehand.

Irritating is one thing it definitely is, and yeah it does make you not want to change gear. I'm sure some people would just live with it but I have a high level of mechanical symapthy and the thought of what ever is causing the vibration makes me cringe every time I feel it!
Thanks, I would appreciate it if you can let me know! I had the intercooler off earlier to have a look and didn't notice any lines on the bulkhead, you think that is capable of causing it?

When I had a new Exedy blue clutch fitted, along with a brand new OEM flywheel, new flywheel bolts, release bearing and spigot bearing, there was a noticeable pulsing from the clutch pedal on the test drive, straight away afterwards. It wasn't bad enough to concern me too much, and Tim Farmer who fitted it didn't think it was anything to worry about.
The good news is that it doesn't do it any more. I don't remember exactly how long it took for it to disappear (a few weeks, I'd guess), but it sorted itself relatively quickly. I can only presume that there was some minor imperfection with the alignment of the clutch face and the flywheel (presumably the clutch material) and that it has now bedded in properly.
