Hi all,

I have a '99. I got the clutch replaced last year under warranty. Recently it has started to judder when cold.

I spoke to IM and my dealer and they say that this is normal because of the materials that are being used.

Is this acceptable?
Has anyone else had cold judder after fitting a new clutch?

If I get clutch judder on a morning I slip the clutch on the handbrake as I put it in the garage that night. Next morning no judder . Don't go mad, I'm only talking 5 seconds or so and it is only required every 3 to 4 weeks. If you have it bad this may not work, but if you catch it early and keep on top of it you won't have any problems.

Read this tip originally on this BBS and tried it with first class results. I now glide past the postman every morning .

On a final point my dealer told me they are now replacing the flywheels as well with the WRX version as this is where the problem lies - don't shoot (or flame) the messenger, this is just what I've heard .

I've got a MY00 Turbo. I spoke to the dealer about clutch judder at the first service and they are replacing the clutch and flywheel under warranty.

Hope this doesn't happen every six months!!!

I had a new clutch and flywheel a few months back on a MY99, now on 13k miles (1.5k later) and its juderring when cold - more so than it did with the original clutch. No doubt it will have to be sorted again

 

Sonu:-the dealer is talking wet!!...i had a clutch replaced on a monday only to be replaced again on thursday of the same week...it had the same problem as you....The week after thay put a P1 clutch cover and other bit's n BOB'S...THIS DID RECTIFY THE PROBLEM....

 

i too have a my99 and had the clutch replaced at 9000 miles. on 14000 now and guess what "beware the judder man my dear"or so the advert goes.

i love my car so much that it doesnt really get me down but will try to get it sorted again.

is this totally sorted on the p1 because i want one but don't really want to spend 28k and still have judder.(and no, i'm not for the muppet forum!)

I had the clutch changed on my MY98 around 6 months ago.

Didn't improve it one bit and it still judders when cold. Only thing is it doesn't do it all the time...sometimes it's absolutely perfect and on other days it's almost undriveable especially when creeping up a hill.

Dealer told me the same thing...I'd just have to put up with it.

Do you guys reckon clutch judder can damage the engine etc?

If there is a chance of damage, then maybe we should group together and contact Watch Dog.

They're taking a look at mine on monday. If I get no joy then I'm up for that.

 

It's related to a dodgey fly wheel my dealer told me on Tuesday that's why it cost me £550 for a new fly wheel and clutch.

Watch Dog could be a good idea. Those of us with European cars have to send the clutch back before they will replace it - for a pan-european warranty this doesn't sound right. Maybe some pressure may make them more helpful.

Please put me down - I have a UK MY98 Terzo with 21,000 miles.

I have had this problem more or less since I had the car 2 years ago. It always happens when cold. It can be temporaily rectified by a slip of the clutch (not good I know).

I mention this to my local Subaru dealer (Heritage of Leicester) and every time I go for a service (every 6 months). They either say they couldn't reproduce the problem(probably testing when the engine is warm), or that it happens on all Subaru's when cold... Not once have the offered to replace the clutch!!

I have recently noticed some judder on my
Dutch import when the cars cold. I havent
tried any of the tips (handbrake & clutch
slip), but if there is really this big a
problem with so many people then I dont
see what my Pan-euro warranty shouldnt take
care of the problem without this shipping
of parts backwards and forwards to Holland.
My car is due for its 7500 mile service so
I will ask the dealer about getting the car
fixed, but if I have no joy I will certainly
be willing to add my name to the Watchdog list.

Lot of talk on this in the 'Clutch Judder on Dutch import' thread too. If people are getting together with questions on the pan-European nature of warranties, then count me in! Are all warranty claims referred to the original importer (e.g. Subaru Netherlands) or is it just for things like clutches where the failure could be caused by a few too many doughnuts (or the tyre-smoking rather than jam variety)?

 

I get very occasional clutch judder on my 11 month old MY00 ONLY when cold. Mentioned it at 15k service, got the 'they all do it' reply.

Interested in how this develops.

May I suggest you go back to the dealer and tell them about the Clutch Judder again. The reason I say this is that there is a new solution to curing clutch judder and that is fitting a P1 clutch. Just putting a normal clutch in again will not cure the problem and it will come back eventually.

I had a new clutch fitted to my MY00 a few weeks ago and I have to say I am delighted with it.

According to my dealer this hasn't been officially approved by Subaru UK yet, although he knows some other dealers have done it succesfully!

I see you are in the London area so maybe a trip to Cheam Motors might be in order....

 

Sonu - I bet you don't get this on the M Coupe mate - I think it is called 'character'.

I had clutch judder on my MY00. If first occured at about 7000 miles. I mentioned it to my dealer (also Cheam Motors). At the time is wasn't that bad and because there was no official fix for it, we left it alone. At that time, the dealer would have replaced the clutch with an identical unit - probably leading to the problem occuring again.

It got gradually worse and it was reported at the 15K service and eventually was replaced at about 18K miles. By this time, I was told that there was an 'official' fix. This was to use the stronger P1 clutch housing (not the whole clutch, just the housing) when replacing the clutch.

Since it has been done (car is now on 25K miles) - I haven't had the judder - so I am please with the result. If you haven't already, speak to Andy Barker (Servicing) at Cheam Motors - he has had loads of experience with this problem. Contacts details are at

Don't write to Ann robinson (or whoever it is ) just yet.

Whenever we get this problem it can be totally eliminated by the following

1. Fit Decent clutch eg AP Organic
2. PROPERLY face off Fly wheel at machine shop.
3. Fit proper pilot bearing... not mickey mouse one
4. Voila!!!! no clutch judder ever ever again

Or bring it to us and we'll do it for you!
