Default Automatic gearbox loosing 99% of it's drive !

I have a 02 Outback with an auto VDC box.

Went around a bend and there was a big clonk from the transmission and then pretty much all the drive was lost.

Have checked and topped up fluid level and the same problem occurs.

Sounds like the clutch packs to me.

However...

The speedo works still fine (reaching say 60mph) when revving up the engine stationary (in D) with handbrake on and it also changes gear. There is some torque transmitted to the drive line but only a few Percent of what there should be.

Every now and again when revving, the transmission clonks as normal drive resumes very temporarily.

It also does the same in reverse

The POWER light on the dashboard flashes on and off and the VDC light becomes illuminated

Any clues to what it could be ?
