Hiya dude,
Had mine off for about 8,000 miles now. No descerable gains apart from glorious amplification of induction suck and turbo spool up noises.
I believe that it is there to protect the induction path from the induction of water and foreign bodies. Some people swear blind that your car will blow up at the first sign of a puddle, others are convinced that the turbo spools up quicker.
I remember travelling up the M1 behind Simon Burton's P1, we were not hanging about and it was pi55ing it down. I sat behind him (100m + ) in his spray cone for about 80 miles. No problems.
I'm either extremely lucky or people will have us believe that your car will blow up without it. I'm sure there is a really good reason that Subaru put them there, but it hasn't caused me any problems.
Biggest benefit is noise
Mikey
By the way, this isn't a "Remove ya resonators cos it's totally safe" post If you do and your car blows up, don't blame me It probably wasn't the lack of a bloody great plastic bowl inside your wing that caused it

It may also depend on the MY of the car.
I saw a dyno graph from an MY01 that had the resonator taken out. It looked like a heart beat (of someone having a heart attack).
It was all over the place.
The resonator was replaced and the boost curve went back to a normal curve.

i have a question though, the pipe indicated, does that need to be inserted into the new pipe or can it be blanked off?

Yes, It has to be reconnected. It is the supply to the idle control valve. The air must be drawn in past the air flow meter for the ECU to contribute the correct amount of fuel.
Without it, the engine will start, run crap then stop
Weld on a little stub T piece is the answer.

is this any good? could i use the old re-circ dump valve t-piece, or is this a bad idea (i.e. too near the turbo, too much air going through it etc.)
before you say anything, i would blank off the other end of that t-piece
