Question Running issues

hi guys, ive got a 97 wrx import and im experiencing some running issues - really bad hesitation, slight misfire and really high hydrocarbon levels (unburnt fuel)

so far ive compression tested the engine - all goof
changed the lamda sensor - old one was trashed
cleaned and regapped spark plugs

ive got a coil pack on order but it hasnt arrived yet.

just wandering if anyone has any good tips, tricks or pointers.

You seem to have the bases covered but if it was me i would definitely put in a fresh set of new plugs,i have never been too convinced of how good cleaning plugs up really do for there reliability and performance if they are pass saving, the trick is cleaning spark plugs that are not worn away already and use a quick drying cleaner, brake cleaner usually. You have to take into consideration that spark plugs are a consumable part.SJ.

I had maf sensor issues previously, I run an orange label housing with the element from a purple label. The last element died so fitted another and has run better since. But I will unplug it shortly and take it for a drive.

The plugs are NGK iridium and are only about 2 months old, regapped them when I did the compression test which helped.

I'm unsure how to retrieve codes from the ecu as it's not obd

connect the black connectors under the dash, turn on the ignition and count the ecu light flashes. long flash is 10 short flash is 1, long long short short short is 23 for example.

The ecu stores fault codes. Do the ecu reset after reading the codes

Are you running the standard air box or an induction kit?
I tried a crappy hks mushroom kit on mine,it ran terrible and eventually went into limp mode, even when I changed back to the standard air box it didn't run right until I had done the ecu reset.

Sounds like faulty maf. Do the ecu reset because they might be old codes that are stored. Take it for a run after reset then read check for any error codes again

i ran an ecu reset, started up, sounded abit better, started to hold revs and as it started to come on boost it spluttered abit.
turned it off, unplugged the maf and it runs smoother.
think its time to go mafless

I have ESL installed. My IAT sensor arrived yesterday so just have to weld a boss on to the intercooler pipework to thread the sensor in to and change a little bit of wiring.
