Default Modding a TD04 or TD05

I'm thinking of changing my TD04 out to a TD05. I've found one on eBay (SN member selling it) which needs a bit of work plus converted to a front entry for my car. Kinugawa turbo sell a TD05 front entry housing with a new compressor wheel, choice of 16/18/20G for the same price of £99 delivered.

So the TD05, rebuilt and converted will cost £200 roughly.

Would it best best to just upgrade and rebuild my TD04? I'm not going after silly power as my gearbox and clutch won't take it. 300bhp would be the max.

Looks like it would do the job, if you feel comfortable doing the upgrade yourself even better

Yeah I'd do it myself, rebuilt a few VNT turbos off diesel VWs etc. They're easy to do so this can only be easier!

What turbo you running now?

Getting on great with the ESL, I'm still playing with it and learning as I go along but I understand a lot of it and how changing things affect the car. It's a great tool, probably the best thing I've bought for the car so far.

Been doing a bit of bodywork myself, cut all the rust away from the passenger side rear arch and inner arch. New metal welded in and all sealed up ready for paint. Next job is Brembos. Gotta clean and paint all the calipers first. I have the full set with new discs and pads along with the fitting kit to mount the rears to a classic. Braided hoses to go on as well. Should make the brakes really good!

Two questions...

1. How much are these 19T wheels capable of producing when attached to a standard TD04L with the large enough injectors etc.

2. When it says that the bearing housing has to be machined. How is this done? Is it a big job?

Haven't done anything as yet, garden work has taken over for now lol. I'm not sure what machine work is required at all. I'll contact them for information. I don't see why the 19T wheel couldn't make 310/320bhp.

Ok so I've emailed Kinugawa. I'll post the response when I get it.

Kinugawa emailed back during the night firstly to say that no machine work was required. I asked them why the listing said that it did and they've responded again saying that they made a mistake and that the bearing housing does indeed need machined and the core balanced. They recommended a complete 19T core with compressor housing to bolt to your own hot side for £229.

Hmm so not quite as cheap as initially thought. I have googled and people with scoobs only seem to get 280-300bhp out of these hybrid turbos (Saab owners seem to quote 340-350!). Which doesn't seem that great compared to the standard TD04 which I am currently getting 270 out of and others have got 280 from.

I had initially planned on a TD05 16g to perhaps get close to 350? But wondered if these would be a better option to get somewhere close. Seems that I will need to go TD05 for that level. Not sure if a 16g would do it or if I would need a 18g. Yes I will have all the supporting mods, know about the gearbox issues etc

Are you still going to stick with the TD04?

I have a print out of my car doing 296bhp and another at 282bhp or something a couple of years ago before I owned it and that's on the TD04. Who knows how accurate the reading is/was at the time though. I don't see the point in me going beyond the TD04 as I'm not wanting to plough cash in to a gearbox any time soon.
