get there for 9am on a week day and you litteraly walk in and get served. I have done this twice now in the past 2 weeks.

If it's a simple swap over with no retention involved they can reissue TAX and MOT in the new reg on the premises. So as soon as you have the tax disc and of course you've informed the insurance, you can swap plates 
For mine, because I was assigning and retaining I had to wait for them to do the transfer and send the new documents by post. Your new V5 will follow in the post but you don't need that to put the plates on the car

Just section 1 mate IIRC. tbh they pretty much instruct you no messin when you get there lol I think once it's on your car under your V5 you become the owner anyway. I have always owned the plate on retention so it's slightly different if its a plate you have bought from a private owner as the existing grantee.
