Advice Required (not Scooby)
Firstly sorry everyone - I know it most definitely is not a Scoob but does anyone have any mechanical experience of 1993 Peugeot 1769 Turbo Diesel engines?
Many thanks.

I have this which contains :- Service schedules, specifications, underbonnet views and maintenance procedures (including timing belt renewal, when applicable) for all popular diesel-engined cars and light commercial vehicles: Audi, Austin/Rover, Citroën, FIAT, Ford, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Renault, Rover, SEAT,Skoda, Vauxhall / Opel and Volkswagen. Fault finding, component testing and renewal procedures.
There is a section on the 1769cc engine in the Peugeot chapter.

Thanks Mark I may need to take a look at this when convenient.
Frayz, the egine is very poor at starting and once running/on the move seems to surge/uneven running.
I've been told two things that it might be:
1. Grit/rubbish in the fuel lines. (Filter changed)
2. Air lock somewhere?
I just don't want to spend/waste lots of money on this as the car is probably only worth £50.
Thanks in advance.

For the starting problems :-
1 i know that pugs suffer with bad earth to the starter motor try cleaning the terminals on the battery and the starter
2 do you know if the glow plugs are getting hot enough
For the running problems
1 try a injector cleaner as the injectors tend to fur up and make car run lumpy
2 i no this might sound silly but what fuel are you using as this can make a difference

Is the car used daily/regularly, has it had fresh fuel this winter? Thinking summer/winter fuel here & possible waxing if still full of summer spec fuel.
Is the poor starting dependant on the weather ie only does it when cold. Thinking glowplugs the same as giggsie.
Did you change the filter in 1. above? If yes was the system bled & primed afterwards. You need to prime it with ignition off at first then prime it with the ignition switched on to activate the stop solenoid. Other places air may have got stuck are at the pump or in the injector pipes. Again they will need bleeding & the system repriming.
Once starting & running a bit better a dose of injector cleaner might help as well.

Thanks Guys
Admittedly I didn't change the filter the garage did.
I do not believe the poor starting is weather related but hey what do I know.
The car (309 5 Door) has got a reasonably new battery but I will certainly clean the contacts and starter motor.
I have no idea whether anything was primed or bled - sorry and to be honest I would not know where to begin....
Thanks

Or does it spin over quickly for what seems like hours before it coughs & splutters into life?
And if a garage fitted the filter they should have done the necessary priming/bleeding so that's one less thing to worry about.
Tea is ready back in a mo to read your reply.

Well got home earlier and thought I'd give it a quick spin around the block. It started first time (hurraahhh) and then died approx 40 secs later and took 4/5 attempts to restart.
Driving was a fairly jerky affair but if light throttle was used it was reasonably smooth.
Also noticed there is an oil leak from what appears to be the rocker cover.

If the leak is more towards the top of the engine than down the side (head gasket) then it shouldn't alter how it's running.
I think the banner ad at the bottom is trying to tell us something.
