Default is my Engine foofed

When i start the car from cold, i get a seconds worth of rattle, then it goes completly and nothing else to be heard.

Is this the famous "piston slap" i hear of?

Is it terminal.

If so is it best to be rebuilt before it goes completly or just run it for as long as poss.

That would be fine, if it had been there for some time, but when something just starts happening that says problems to me.

Good to hear you have had it for ages though, well not good, but .......AHHHH you know what i mean

My car had slight piston slap mate, though this had nothing to do with the engine going bang, I'll put money that it's due to oil pump failure

Best thing to do is to have the compression ratios checked, it should be around 145psi on each cylinder, if No 4 Cyl is less than 120, then it's only a matter of time before the block needs rehoning.

the compression on my engine about 2 months ago was:

1 - 145
2 - 140
3 - 145
4 - 135

Do regular oil changes with good quality oil, and the usual stuff applies, don't rag the car until the oil is properly warmed up, always allow the engine to cool down, etc

any good garage will have a compression tester, it's a bit awkward as you say, as all the sparkplugs have to be taken out.
But you get a good idea of the condition of the engine

if your piston slap only lasts a few moments, then don't worry too much, as John Said

Cookie

Get it checked out mate, could well be something other than piston slap.

I thought piston slap was only on 98 model cars! (Classics)

Better safe than sorry!

good luck cookie, hopefully nothing serious.

might be a pump bearing of some sort, giving a clunk before spinning up.

does it happen just from cold, or from each new start?

If it only lasts a second or two, I doubt if it's piston slap. It would need to run a bit longer than that to expand the piston to remove excess clearance. It's more likely related to a part that requires oil pressure? Also look towards the cam belt tensioner?
