Default Error 22 knock senor

Hi all, just got my Impreza running after a nightmare with an air lock.

It is now showing me error 22. Knock sensor. should I be worried as I want to know what the error means is it:

1. is this error to say the knock sensor is seeing to much knock.

2. is it to say that the sensor is not working correctly.

I may have over tightened. Newbie mistake. Read up that it should be 17lb of torque.

If it is in fact point 2 then I will get a new sensor.

The engine itself run really sweet. No obvious knocking sounds that you get. Had 4 impreza's. Had three that have had knocking bottom ends.

Ideas?

A knock sensor is not looking for a knocking bottom end mate

Its looking for detonation happening inside the cylinders, whch can destroy the engine very quickly, melted pistons etc.

The sensor is faulty , replace it and torque the new one correctly and reset the ecu , job done.

Talking

Thats the response I wanted to hear.

Thanks Baz. Do you think this is why the car stalls after a period of time or not?

My other issue is just odd.

Could also be the knock sensor wiring to the ECU. I had the same error code flash up. Replaced sensor with genuine new one, issue persisted. Kept going into limp mode after the CEL flashed up intermittently. Took to Richard Henry in Bradford and Andrew rewired my knock sensor direct to the ECU out of the main loom. Problem sorted, issue hasn't been back. MY99 UK turbo by the way - common.

Ok guys the plot thickens.

I have check my torque of the sensor. it was at 15lb so torqued up to 17lb.

Ok I have noticed the car only throws up this error after my stalling problem starts....

So I guess there is det in the engine but it doesn't start until 10 minutes after it has been idling.

Any thoughts?

Knock sensor has been known to come on if you have a faulty maf aswell. I always thought it was when knock was detected in engine that it comes on so didnt replace my knock sensor straight away. But if it is faulty it can retard ignition so you can lose power. I changed my knock sensor with a new one and it started working straight away and cleared CEL for good. I did have a hairline crack in mines.

Funny you should mention a air leak. A friend of mine owns a auto electricians. He suggested I look for a air leak in the pipes.

He has said it is possible that the air pressure is being backed off more and more as the car gets warmer. However because of a air leak it is backing off more than it should. Thus should solves both my outstanding issues.

Will have a crack at that tomorrow after noon.

Thanks for all your opinions.

Funny, I have the same problem.

I bought my classic 99 Turbo from here a couple of weeks ago. The CEL comes on intermittently, but only for a few seconds. Sometimes not at all.

I read the codes this afternoon and I have 32 and 22. Knock and O2 sensor.

I will be taking most of it apart next week to install new plugs so while I am at it I will clean the K&N panel filter, clean the MAF and inspect the other sensors.

I want to know though, which O2 sensor is it? The car runs very well and very economically. Confused.com lol.

On a MY99 uk turbo there is only one O2 sensor, top of the down pipe just behind the turbo. Unplug old and unscrew out the sensor. M18x1.5 fine thread. Knock sensor will require inter cooler to be removed as it sits on the block. PITA to get to but not too bad.
