Default engine management light

Help please. Had an 56 plate 2.5 impreza wrx for 2 days and the engine management light has just come on. no changes in the car whatsoever. Any ideas? (in layman's terms) Guessing it could be loads of things?, trying my hardest not to panic (or puke). Guess I need to get it plugged in? Is it okay to drive a short distance to the garage?
Many thanks.

Yes could be a number of things.
The guys on here are a helpful bunch mostly
Especially the guys n gals from Wales.
Keep the car off boost and get the error code read ASAP. Take it to a garage who deal with these cars,Three Arches are in Wales and have a great reputation on here. I would also post in the Wales section as there are a lot of good members and someone close to you might meet up and plug their diagnostics in for you and give you some advice?

also spend a few quid on one of those bluetooth ELM scanners:

You can use it with your smartphone to read and reset codes without having to go anywhere.
