Thatl be when i want an excuse to fit a manual box

Used to have a V12 Jag auto.. but that developed like 9000bhp at idle (ok slight exageration) but it had so much tourqe it would take off with very little revs!

i wouldnt go revving it that hard then shoving it in drive i reckon it would break the box after a very short while, i would go down the manual gearbox route or talk to some racing instructors about launching.

manual box just isn't an option at the moment, probably would just sell current scoob and buy a manual one if I wanted a manual.

I belive its called power breaking, used to do it in my Jag/ a prelude i hade, and oodles f fleet cars. Just wondering whats the best way in a scooby!

Very difficult to launch a auto well. You can, if you know what you are doing then yes balance the throttle at 2/2.5k (not sure in an impreza) with foot on the brake. Release brake and plant right foot.

Make sure that you do it for the minimum time possible and don't just drop it into D as it will put massive stress on the torque convertor.

Gas it with the left foot on the brakes, as it hits the stall point (revs stop going up) release the brakes, hold it on the stall to long and you overheat the oil in the converter, use a boost gauge as you ideally want to come off the brakes just as boost arrives assuming you can get boost at the rpm you'r held down to!

Banging it into gear doesn't hurt the convertor, just the forward clutches and rest of drivetrain!

As above, think its called powerbraking ? In my Supra I go for about 4K then release the brake and you rocket off the line, if you are doing a lot of drag starts you might be better putting in torque converter.

These can fly if you get it right! I used to play the "launch" trick in the days of Audi 100 turbos, and they really used to smoke the tyres!
The Man earlier was referring to "high stall" converters, used on Yank drag cars. The object is to allow revs right up into the high torque band, before it starts to bite. It's how come they can get two tons of V8 up and running!
