Best turbo for Quarter mile
Im setting my classic up for quarter mile fun with some friends. Its a kinda budget build so i dont wanna throw loads of money at it but
Im just wondering what the best turbo is in terms of quick blast down the quart mile strip? Presume i need something small so little lag,
Ive got a apexi power FC and commander to manage it all, Full decat exhaust and usual bolt on mods

Don't worry about lag on the strip! You'll be launching hard and changing fast.
My long term plan is to get a big turbo and run low boost to avoid torque killing my 5 speed box. Hoping for about 400bhp and 330lbft. It'll be laggy though when pottering around town.

Power is what you want not reduced lag, most dedicated 1/4 mile cars run launch control and flat shift, so lag is not an issue.
So you ideally want the biggest, dirtiest turbo you can find, along with huge injectors.
The clutch and gearbox is what will make or break a good 1/4 mile car, strong and reliable with good tall gearing, ideally you want to be in fourth accross the line, so three changes.

Mat you can run a 20g and just map the boost very progressively, be a better option than fitting a huge turbo? Map the boost so that you don't get full boost till 5000rpm, by that time the torque curve is starting to drop. Would drive like a big engined NA car

I can imagine to make 400bhp at 5000rpm I'd be needing a big helping of boost on a TD05 20G. I've got to think about running a turbo at it's most efficient to help engine temps. 400bhp will be a lot for a stock WRX.

i was tempted on keeping the TD04 and run 10%-20% meth
after seeing a youtube video on a wagon running a 04!

WRX's are the kings of the strip that's for sure.

2009 265bhp WRX 0-60 = 4.7secs 1/4 13.5
2009 305bhp STI 0-60 = 5.0secs 1/4 13.6
No thanks, I'll run 20% less torque and protect the quicker box whilst minimising spin...

They may make even more with other supporting mods but most WRX owners have changed up by 280bhp.
It's strange stepping up from a small turbo, with my TD04 I'd keep up with Audi RS4's to 70ish without launching but moving to the bigger TD05 I can't even keep up with 1.2 Corsas from the lights. If I launch it though it's a different story, I can't see any 01> STI south of 400bhp keeping up with me.

A model that is consistently 20% slower than a WRX?

Anyway as I'm not at work this week I'm not getting paid to laugh at your sti envy so have fun trying to justify not having enough cash to be fast
Peace out homies!

I made 280/273 @1.02bar, most I've heard from a OE TD04 is 310bhp stateside. I can imagine they are shifting a lot of warm air at this point.

TBH the JDM WRX had to eventually be detuned as STI drivers were complaining. All 2001 onwards WRX's released are 20% faster than the STI version, that means a 400bhp WRX lives with a 480bhp STI..
STI, what a disappointment now we know the truth. Still that box can safely handle the 430bhp you did a 12.8 with tom.

The 2009 WRX tested was a Saloon, it beat the 6 speed STI with 40bhp less. If it'd had the 305bhp the STI had it would have beaten it badly.

I'm already getting bored of my TD05, it's like the 6 speed, tough as hell but not enough power from it for the lag. Too quiet too. My TD04 was really whiny.
Seriously giving thought to a sc42 and aiming for 380/330.

20G will be getting pushed too hard past 370bhp I can imagine. A few on here saying they got around 380bhp but from 1.55-1.7bar.
I want to hit 380 from around 1bar (1.2bar max) I want the turbo at peak efficiency and low torque. Will a TD06 20g do the job?
