uprated gearbox or sti ?
hi all,
im not planning on having to do this to my car anytime soon "hopefully"
but just interested . why do so many people choose to go with an sti 6speed rather than upgrading the gears in the standard wrx gearbox ?? as it can apparently be a cheaper option and you know your getting brand new gears that are rated to big power ! is it to do with the ratios on the sti and the fact its a 6 spd ?? only my wrx will be pushing the standard gearbox to its limits at about 340bhp so im expecting it to give up sometime in the near future
and would like to see peoples different views on this ?
thanks for reading

Im going for the uprated 5 speed. Been advised that sti boxes are good for upto 400bhp, but then you're gambling with anything over, while the uprated will get me upto 600bhp safely, so im going the safe way even though i aint going for the 600bhp (maybe 530bhp if its still road-drivable)
The 5speed is 30kg lighter than the 6 speed too.
The only thing I can think of why anyone would want to go 6 speed, is the extra economy on the motorways (as thats where you're only going to get to use a sixth gear anyway).

What kind of prices? I'm currently running 340 370 on an 06 hawk standard clutch gear box currently no prob at the mo as only on 20k and not driven hard all the time, but I reckon it's a matter of time. What you think?

I ran my bug at 350 BHP plus no problem with the 5 speed...... when I got the cold air sorted and meth injection added the torque went up and I broke two 5 speeds in 8 weeks
I now have a jap 6 speed box to cope........... not that good on the motorway though as 6th is a bit short
