MY99 Hiccup when accelerating in lower gears
#1
Had this from new: (got the "they all do that sir" from the dealer each time I mentioned it). But I have noticed no one has posted any threads about it.
Basically what happens is this: Accelerate hard, reach redline, change gear, floor the accelerator again and the car "jerks" momentarily before picking up again. Happens in mainly 1st - 2nd, 2nd - 3rd. Doesn't always do it. Worse if you rush the gearchange.
Anyone else have this, what could it be ?

I've got an RB5 which is a MY99 in other words and have noticed the the jerkiness you describe when really going for it. I have found that if you just fractionally release the throttle just before you change gear and then get on the gas progressively (although still quickly obviously) once in the next gear it pulls really strongly but smoothly. I don't think there is any point in changing gear and hitting the gas aggresively as it doesn't add any speed in real terms and the smoother you are the better it feels...

Thanks for your replies, thought it was maybe my car or my driving I must admit, you can drive around it by being less brutal. I wonder if the new WRX will be like this when I get it ?

Also have this - dealer again said "they all do that". But, I test drove a MY98 which didn't and also a W reg PPP car which didn't.
Dealer said it was due to "stalling the turbo" and that I wasn't changing gear FAST enough. Fitted a quick shift, but it still does it - only way to avoid it is to be much less aggressive - not really why I bought the car.
It would be interesting to know if there is a common thread with the ECU model No. to this. Mine's a (sh*t MY00) ae802 green label. The PPP car is obviously remapped anyway, but for MY99 and MY00 this is AFAIK based on the MY99 ae800 (or ae801) ECU. Does anyone with the earlier ae800 or ae801 ECU (black or brown label) get this "characteristic". Hence would switching the ECU (or getting it reprogrammed by Ecutek - see Gutless MY00s thread) fix this?

I managed to drive my car flawless this morning. After changing up a gear, floor the throttle progressively giving the turbo time to spool up. Works a treat, and it doesn't hinder your progress.

If you ever pop down to stoke on trent, ill take you out in mine you can see if its the same.
