Question Paddle Clutches?

I read somewhere that clutches with 4 paddles makes the clutch a bit on and off and diffcicult to slip. Are paddle clutches with 5 or even 6 paddles as difficult to control as 4 paddle versions?

It's not the number of paddles that makes it like a switch, it is the lack of damping springs in the friction disc.

Most ceramic type clutches are race clutches and not really suitable for road use.

BUT, if you have to use one, because you have somewhere over 500 hp then ceramic it has to be. In which case, buy one with at least 4 paddles if a single plate and make sure that it has spring damping on the friction disc.

You will need a steel billet flywheel too, as any flywheel that uses cast iron will be ripped to bits in no time by the ceramic material.

None of the multi plate clutches that l have ever seen have an spring damping, but someone on here may know better and recommend, if you are lucky.

The solid friction disc types are extremely hard on transmissions and you will not be doing your standard gear type transmission any favours by fitting one unless you really have to.

For what it is worth:
I ran on the road and hillclimb my 911 on an RSR paddle clutch with 3 paddles and stiff centre sprung drive plate. It had an aluminium lightweight cover plate (a 911 cluch is a huge affair) and a stock cast flywheel (super light as stock).

It was truely crap.
It welded itself to the flywheel after one very hard tyre warming pre start...

Changed it back to a stock Sach 911 clutch kit and never looked back.

My Sti runs 360 bhp ish and has survived about 120 full '6000 rpm/dump the clutch' starts on an AP Organic clutch and an API lightened flywheel by comparison. Drove home in heavy traffic tonight after another hard day at the races. No probs at all.

Most of the twin plate clutch manufacturers offer both sprung, and solid plate versions.

This is also true of paddle clutches, although some companies only offer a solid plate version.

All the Exedy twin plates I stock are sprung, and pretty easy to use.
