Default STi RA Gearbox

Sorry if it has been asked before...

I have an '95 STi RA and was wandering how much torque the box will take? Sencible use, not drag launches etc.

about 300 to 350 lbft reliably.

That's with reasonable use.

My Sti V3 took 370 lbft for 3 years with very un-reasonable use and is still perfect.

Just luck of the draw with the boxes then.. Sometimes you'll get a good one and other times not...

I was wandering if the R/RA box was any stronger as the ratios were different, and if they were changing them they might have specified different materials.

What is it that actually brakes in the box? The actual gears themselves, or other subsiduary items like synchro rings, selector forks etc.

Most seem to fail in third, going into it and taking a good dose of torque.
Clumbsey shifting will kill one too.
The strongest 5 speeders are Version 5 and 6's.

You're not wrong. I have stripped third in two standard WRX boxes in the last few months

Mine took something like 320. So, the range 300-350 will be a safe answer for that.
