Best get a garage to listen to it, I once had the same and it turned out to be the water pump on its way out - which if neglected could have thrown the cambelt..

Without hearing the knock nobody will be able to tell you what it is; as this BBS unfortunately is not supplied with ears

Pop the car along to someone who knows what they looking at to have a listen; Dave @Api has alway been open and frank (i.e he won't suck though his teeth and say "bige ends mate" even though it may not be, which it seems some "specialists" like to cash in on that Impreza foible ).

It was the later phase I engines that suffered '97-'98 Not particularly common on the >'99 It could possibly be the cam belt tensioner.

Hi jay, trust me, its piston slap!
You heard it dissappear when we came back from the test drive.
TSL will probably recommend a new short block, where in 30000 miles, it will end up slapping again!

Love the teg m8. Very different to the scoob, very raw, pin sharp handling and a fantastic vtec engine. It just begs you to rev it more and more.

Piston Slap can be very loud at first especially after a very cold & frosty night, When the clearences are at the Max. You want to here my Mrs's Mg with a K series engine after a Minus 6 night, Sounds like a Piston cracking , never mind slapping, But after a few mins quietens down as the heat reduces the tolerances.
It it was the Bottom End, or little end etc , i would of expected it to have died fully by now.
But as stated for piece of mind, Take it to somewhere reputable for an Honest answer & not a Money Sucking One

Piston slap is, more often than not, just an annoyance that goes away when the car is warmed up. Unless you're going through engine oil like petrol, leave it well alone.

IIRC 99s are also prone to cambelt pre-tensioners degrading which can cause a slapping noise when cold too. If you're worried have a word with David from API
