1st gear gone?
hello all, my mates got a 94 wrx and the other night whist having a blast he couldn't get 1st gear, 1st gear is a no go 2nd is a bit notchy but 3 4 5 and reverse all seem ok.
question is- is the box fcuked? he thinks it is but i said i would ask on here see if any of you lot have had the same problem.
cheers
dave

well, most probably yeah the syncros are shot. but it's POSSIBLE that the clutch is not fully disengaging not allowing it to get into the lower gears where there is not as much momentum/inertia all that jazz.
my old impreza did something LIKE that. First it wouldn't go into 1st then 2nd and then all. Ended up the throwout fork had broken (stamped steel POS) and therefore was not disengaging the clutch.
IMHO either way you'll have to pull the trans (kinda sucks on the floor), or at least the engine (which is like a 30 min job, yay subaru!) so keep your fingers crossed.
Oh and and more information on noises, feel, whatnot would be helpful with the diagnosis.
Peace

Have you tried replacing the clutch fluid and bleeding it all out, and replacing the gearbox oil with something decent like castrol syntrax or mobil gear oil??I had a notchy 2nd gear on a 93 wrx and changing the gearbox oil sorted it

Bent/Broken selector fork or rod/arm?
Does it go in the position of 1st gear but when the cutch pedal is released there's not drive... if so could have stripped the 1st gear dog clutch, if thats possible. If it doesnt go in the 1st gear position and feels like there some resistance putting it in could have bent some teeth on the 1st gear dog clutch which is now stopping it engaging.
Either way its gonna have to be inspected to find out exactly, not likely to be a quick fix.
