Question DIY: Gearbox oil change - tips for a quick job

Hi Guys,

I have purchased 4 litres of RedLine shock proof oil to try and remedy a notchy 2nd and 3rd when the gearbox has warmed up. I only have a jack and the basic tools at hand and have never looked underneath my Scooby before (98 WRX wagon). I also do not have a step by step service manual or guide

Is anyone happy to walk me through the basic steps and point out where the vital parts are on the car such as drain plug, refill point, tools required etc. I did have a quick peek at the gearbox and spotted the massive drain plug! but thats about it!!!

Thanks again. I always find the advise to be spot on from all you other Scooby fans out there.

Not done it yet myself but will be shortly. AFAIK it's a case of dropping the old oil out via the large drain plug you have mentioned then refill down the dipstick tube on the top of the box just in front of the bulkhead.

As above, it's quite easy to drain the oil out, just undo the large bolt (Think it's a 19mm) on the bottom of the gear box and let it drain out.

Filling it up is another matter!!!!

The gear box dip stick is located at the back of the engine by the turbo (Left hand side), remove the dipstick and you fill it through this.

I used a length of tube and funnel and filled it via this. If you don't you'll end up in a right mess.

That is how you do it, other than in order to drain the oil quickly remove the g/b dipstick first (to allow air into the g/b quicker), and that the drain bolt is 21mm...
3lt should be more than enough (the capacity of a classic 5sp g/b is2.7-2.8lt) , and try not to overfill.

Capacity of the 5 speed box on a classic is 3.5 litres I thought?

Default litres?

I'll have to do some careful filling . I've got enough oil for 3.5ltrs. I'll pop 3 in and go by the dip stck for the rest

You might wish to just fill it over the max.
Get the gearbox hot before you drain it, will get all the cr@p stuff out.
Check the drain plug for debris!

Funnel and wide bore tube absolutly needed, take your time to allow it all to 'get-into' the gears.
Check level after a good run.

I just had my gearbox oil changed yesterday, it takes 3.5 litres, and the garage charged me a quite reasonable tenner for labour + oil + vat, came to £35 quid which was good, and saved me the hassle, unfortunately it did not help me with the problem of a clunky gear change from third to forth, looks like the syncromesh is on way out

Castrol syntrax (Driveline) has been known to solve alot of notchy synchros. Will cost you about £40 for the oil though.
