Gearstick freeplay

Noticed that my car has quite alot of freeplay sideways on the gearstick...
Is this normal / how can i change it ? even when in gear it seems to have alot of freeplay to the sides.
any ideas ?

There are two springs on the gear linkage (under the car) that hold the lever central, if one should break it ends up being floppy.

Did you discover if that was the problem? i have a similar problem with freeplay to the left but cant see where the spring would be from/go any ideas?
