Type R box: man enough for racer on slicks?
Opinions sought on if a MY 97 Type R box with DCCD will cope with 400 x 360 engine and slicks in serious competition driving (not drag racing)

swings and roundabouts isn't it
It seems to be quite random how well these boxes last. I would think you'd be in the limit with a road car and your box must get a hard time of it.
Sg72 stripped a V5 type R box at a very similar power level iirc (though it might have just been the center ripped out the clutch).
I wouldn't like to put money on being able to drive the car home after every event if it was my car.
That's just my opinion which doesn't come through particular experience sorry

Mark: pm'd back just.
Today my Sti v3 is in the car being driven to hell and back for 3 years, 1 1/2 at 380 x 360 ish engine and all on smi slick Kumho's. No noises/crunches/snicks/etc at all.
Just still works.
If the Type R is with wider gears etc then this must be better?
One thing i do not do though is 'power-shift'...I'm and engineer!

None of the stock 5 speeds has wider gears than the next, gear sets from Sti's are meant to have seen some additional post machining strenghtening processes, although this does seem to vary depending upon the age of the box. The only stock boxes that are known to be a bit stronger are the later ones from phase 2 Sti's ie versions 5 and 6.
Graham, stick with the original plans; buy a 6 speed (who's gears are much, much larger) or a phase 2 box as a donor for a ppg conversion

Thanks for the info Tim.
There are several boxes on ebay and I'm tempted actually more by the dccd than anything.
Hillclimbed today and gave the box death, and drove home with the wife in the car, again.
