when people talk about having a gearbox rebuilt.....how is it made stronger?

ive read of people running larger power of having "rebuilt 5 speed" boxes to cope with it....how can that work?

It only works in the situation where it has fresh bearings inside. Unless you replace the gears with bigger [ more expensive ] ones it can only be strengthened in the sense that it is not slack and allowing parts to move out of mesh.

The early TY 752 type boxes [ up to 1998 ] are notorius for casing flex and once that happens then disaster is going to come calling. The later TY 754 is a relatively stronger casing and will form an upgrade to a pre 1999 car. Neither will last long on 400 plus horsepower if used carelessly.

That help?

certainly does, thanks david. So the gear casing on an 03wrx is stronger than that of a pre 98 car then?

that puts my mind at relative rest with barely 300bhp (and used with consideration)

Thanks.
