Default Gearbox Advice

As above really. I have a my93 wrx and the gearbox has decided to 'let go'. 3rd gear is now in pieces and I am hoping somebody would be able to point me in the right direction for a new gearbox.

But which gearbox there's so many?

I know I would I be better off with one off a R A model? Or would a 6 speed be better? If 6 Speed would it be JDM / UK??

I am running only slight mods (Z4 ECU, full de-cat, ARC Induction Box with K&N panel filter) and the car does see some track use. Any info would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance

Iain

There is an sti2 gearbox on ebay for sale , or you could get yours rebuilt by API , Town end garage . Alternately you could get API to build you an STi5 box and diff with 3.9 ratios for sensible money.

my 93, 6 speed is a possibility but the main benefit is for cars with bigger horsepower than you appear to have.

A JDM 6 speed kit from us is £1800 plus VAT [ not dccd] and gives you all you need to get it into the car, EXCEPT for a rear diff.

Your car has a 4.11:1 diff ratio front and rear and the 6 speeds - JDM & UK all use 3.9:1 final drives. So you'd need a 3.9 rear diff to go with the 6 speed 'kit' . 3.9 rear diffs cost between £250 and £450 depending upon used/rebuilt/viscous/plated etc. etc.

That'll put the price up and depending upon whether you want professionals to fit it all or DIY the price will go up again. Typically we'd charge £500 plus VAT for the gearbox conversion and diff fit.

I think I'd recommend a later STi 5 or 6 5 speed box for you which will be considerably cheaper but will still need a final drive ratio change.

Again depending upon rebuilt/used etc etc an STi 5 speed is typically £650 - £1200 and reflects the spec of whatever is supplied [ from here ]

STi 5 /6 runa 4.4:1 rear diff and those are similar in price to 3.9 quoted above.

OR We could build a hybrid gearbox with STi 5/6 ratios ands build around a 4.1:1 ratio front diff, thus keeping your original rear diff. That box would be the £1200 option from above.

Several options then and I believe I've covered most call me if you're confused. I have just one 6 speed left at the moment with at least 6 more coming in later July.

Good Luck David APi

Cheers David

Just the information I needed. It's definatly food for thought so it's off to the bank manager again lol.

The reason I was interested in a six speed was for the acceleration but if the benefits over a type-RA are small and the price is big then i think the RA is my best option. RA box 'should' go straight in shouldn't it without changing rear diff???

Thanks again, I may be in touch soon......

MY 93

I'm based in Kent and the Gbox is near Ashford.
I'm not looking for alot of money, just trying to re-coup the costs of a 6 speed.
