The spanner chucker (top bloke) looked puzzled. He had never heard or dealt with anything like it before. However, he seem's to think that the "slippers", his term for them, in the rear diff spend most if not all their time going forwards when cold and therefore are meshed, but I reverse out of my garage every morning and they, "the slippers", may take a turn of the diff to mesh. !!!! They did change the diff and gearbox oil free of charge and asked me to try again in the morning. It's not causing any damage or will potentially cause any in the future in their opinion.
I await the morrow.

If you get a friend to look closely at the tyre as you reverse on full lock they will see the tyre skip over the ground. When the tyres warm up they grip more and don't skip.

I seem to have this noise after the clutch was changed ( fromt wishbones dropped / drive shafts removed from gearbox ) and it is a single <Clunk> as the lock goes from frull one side back to centre .. say when reversing out of a space or entering a parking space.
Heard it may be a CV joint protesting at full deflection on full lock.
Would this or the ball joints on the wishbone be at risk of failing?

I have this problem on full left down lock also. I don't think this is normal behaviour. My car also tramlines to the left quite regularly, which I reckon is related.
I need to check mine out properly, but I suspect a failing CV joint and or tired bushes. I may be wrong but can't see what else it could be.
Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?
Ben

mine does this also wrx04, posted a tread on the general site and the opion is tyres.
Spoke to dealer and the difference in tread depth front to rear can cause slight diff wind up when cold.
But only in reverse on full lock and when cold.

I was just talking about this 5 mins ago with a mate and lo and behold there is a thread about here on SN. My car has been doing this recently too, it's a MY00 if that makes any difference.
My scoob does it no matter if I'm on full left or right lock and reversing.

I had this problem in my old classic the clunking turned into grinding in the end i had all sort's done to try and stop it new CV boot's, bush's tracking and balancing alway's stopped for a little while then came back, but more so when the car was cold as you say.
I ended up getting rid in the end as i was spending money on it left right and centre so i got a newage in stead.
Hope you can sort your problem's out fella's
