what type of oil should i be putting in.
i need to do a oil change at the weekend and was wondering what type of oil i should use, i've had a look through my receipts and its not obvious to whats been used in the past.
i've done a search and the main opinion seems to be either 5w30 or 5w40, fully synthetic.
Does this sound right?
car spec is full decat, headers, filter, motec, pump etc etc if it makes a difference.
Thanks

thanks for the links, good info there.
after digging a bit deeper, well, i phoned TSL, i've been using 10w/50 fully synthetic.
just need to find some now.

Dont use the 5 rated oils, a min of a 10 rated oil for a turbocharged impreza, the most common used with no problems are castrol RS 10w60, motul 300v 15w50 and mobil1 motorsport 15w50 (all fully synthetic).

Oilman these engines may be boxster type but they are not Porsche ... 5w-40 is a not to be recommended from experience but then enough people have already mentioned that to you.
10w-40, 15w-50 or (shock horror) 10w-60 fully synthetic oil is best used in these engines especially GC8's, Motul, Castrol, Mobil for choice, Sylkolene at a pinch although viscocity index degrades pretty quickly. Shell also does a 10-60 although I've never tried that personally so can't recommend (yet)
IMHO of course

I don't wish to cause offence but viscosity index is a measure and has nothing to do with degradation.
VISCOSITY INDEX (V.I.) - the measure of the rate of change of
viscosity with temperature. This change is common to all fluids - some
more, some less. Heating tends to make them thinner, - cooling, thicker.
The higher the V.l., the less the tendency for the viscosity to change. V.l.
is determined by formula from the viscosities at 40°C and 100°C in
accordance with the ASTM Test Method D567 or D2270. The latter test
is required for V.l.'s above 100. High V.l. oils are often preferred for
service in which a relatively constant viscosity is desired under
conditions of varying temperature.
The viscosity index does not degrade.
I do not proclaim to be an expert in tuning scoobies, it's simply not my field, I merely comment oil related topics.
It is misleading to make statements about 5w oils when they are perfectly suitable for "many" scoobies, particularly ones manufactured from around 2000 onwards. Sure there are cases where either modifications or age may make a more viscous oil a better choice but blanket statements are simply not technically correct.
Yes I've heard all the arguments and do not agree, it's down to readers to make their own minds up and do their own research (why not try calling Subaru UK or Castrol's, Mobils, Motuls or Silkolene's tech helplines) and then decide what's best.
Oil is my business and I believe that statements must be factual.

my car is sti my03 i use v300 15/50 are you saying i should use 5-40
i was told to use 15/50 and that will give better protection to my engine
also heard if the quality of fuel is bad it is better to use 15/50

There shouldn't be a problem using 15w-50 but I think you'll find 5w-40 on a standard car more suitable and the one that's recommended. I'm not sure why bad quality fuel should affect the oil selection so I can't confirm or deny this one. I've never heard of this being a criteria before.
If it's fuel dilution you are referring to then it affects all oils and causes them to lose viscosity therefore a thicker oil may be able to cope with it for longer but it will degrade just like thinner oils but then again this is a different issue to fuel quality.
Hope this helps
