Hello All,

As the title suggests, for a MY01 (New Age). Ordered de cat up-pipe and looking to do the job myself.

Are there any show stoppers I should know about?

What would be the suggested general procudure?

Tis not a very nice job to do. You may be lucky in that your car is fairly new and the nuts may not be too tight. You will have to remove either the turbo or the header on that side as well.

Its a b#tch of a job unless you have access to a ramp,make sure you use new gaskets on both ends as they will leak if you use the originals and use some lubricating oil the day before on all the studs as at 3 years old they will be tight or may even snap off.

My main dealer did mine and f#cked it up big time, they used the old gasket and far too much lube and the thing blew its a#se off and smoked like Dot Cotton.

The return visit the following day it was all sorted as i supervised the job.

I know it is going to be a fiddley 4rse of a job. I am lucky that I do have access to a ramp. I use a local indepandant garage and quite often they let me use their ramp to change oil and stuff, this will be a long job though, so a few quid to 'hire' it may be in order me thinks.

I would imagine gaskets are dealer only?

I have a few weeks to get this done before TEK 3, so any more advice out there will be most welcome.

After recent problems (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...t=horrid+noise) with the decat up-pipe I had fitted to my car just before Christmas (by a recognised top Scooby specialist - not DIY) I would add that it's absolutely vital to make sure the flanges are completely flat as the gasket can leak & make a horrid buzzing noise if the two pieces of exhaust don't pull up evenly.

I'm also changing the up pipe and down pipe on my UK300, but I've been told by quie a few performance companies who have done this to Subaru's that they have used the original gaskets. They said just clean them up before re fitting, and they are as good as new ones. Saves a few quid too, as I've also been told the gaskets from Subaru are not cheap.

Did this on my classic STi just after chrimbo (to save the £100 one of the tuner companies were going to charge me - thinking it can't be that hard). After doing it, I would have gladly paid the £100 they were asking. The job wasn't too hard, but you have to take the downpipe off (not too much of a problem), take part of the headers off, and then slot the up-pipe out, and then reverse the process to fit. I reused the gaskets, and they are fine (cleaned 'em up a bit). Doesn't sound too much, but took me about 3-4 hours, which in retrospect, would have made it worth going to the tuning company!

I have a a couple of gaskets spare, yes they are dealer only.

I have a downpipe to turbo and an up pipe to turbo, so you'd just need the header to up pipe.

I'll post them both to you for £20

Are the gaskets on the up pipe the same style as on the Down pipe, i.e. the hollow metal ones that actually compress to even out the matting surfaces, and can therefore only be used once?

I certainly wouldn't recommend using the gaskets again........if it takes you 3 - 4 hours to do the job why risk doing it again for the sake of a tenner, when the pipe blows from the gasket you didn't replace.......

Well I guess you may do it quicker the second time around

Its a bit of a fiddly job,and i didnt even use ramps!!!

One piece of advice that hasnt been given here yet is that you will find it easier to undo the O/S engine mount and jack the engine up a couple of inches so you can remove the oe catted uppipe.
Oh yeah-if your new uppipe hasnt got any studs in it allready(turbo end) ,go put some new ones in before you start the job,as you wont be able to get the old ones out!
