I run a de-catted exhaust on my 99-00 and had further improvements when the manifolds were ported.
I've got the turbo off just now and the std up-pipe looks quite restrictive for flow.

Anyone had any power gains by changing the up-pipe to aftermarket? or quicker spool up of the turbo?

If it's a good thing to change it, what do i go for? any recommendations?

Like the other thread any feedback to help a scoobynut would be helpful

Hi,

I believe the dp to be the most restrictive part of the exhaust system on a standard car. I've heard from a lot of people that the dp alone will let loose quite a few hp:s. Right this second, my car is undergoing a dp swap together with some other bits and pieces. Can't wait to take her out for a drive later on (or tomorrow, depending on how fast the subaru shop works)

Regards

Daniel

Hi Maddog

I fitted a Scoobysport Up-Pipe - the one they sell for the MY01 - to my MY99.

Can' tell you the gains in performance to the original part because I had to swap to a smaller turbo aswell.

The only thing I mentioned was that the sound of the exhaust system has become more "metallic".

And you could fit a EGT Gauge quite easy because theres is already a hole in the Uppipe.
Frank :-)

Cheers guys

Anyone else have any experience with changing the up-pipe or know if replacement up-pipes give any benefit?
cheers

It looks awful doesn't it!

Thankfully I have sourced a manifold with an uppipe. I have mapped one car with a manifold/uppipe and obviously closed looked at Stephen Done's manifold maps to see how I can beat him The effect over 3000 RPM is dramatic. The uppipe must share a part in this. However, at least we don't have cats in ours like the MY01.

The other issue is gasket leaks because the original uppipe has a flexible joint - MRT do one, but you will be stung on import and carriage if you can actually get them to supply you at all.

So it's definitely a good thing to do then?

I see Scoobysport sell one as well as MRT. Anyone have thoughts on these?

John
Can't think why the original up-pipe has to be flexible since the turbo and the rest of the exhaust components (mid to rear excluded) have fixed mounting points.

Or am i missing something?

I fitted a SSport uppipe at the same time as I done another mod (turbo intake) so I can't say exactly how much improvement there was. The gross result was +30bhp and an earlier spool up
This pipe has no expansion piece but is made from annealled stainless. I have had no problems with leakage at joints.

Sounds like you need to do both the intake and the up-pipe to get a noticeable result?

+30BHP @ flywheel ....sounds quite a bit of an improvement for not too much work.
What intake do you use Andy?

Looks like Up-pipes are becoming a FAQ!

Maddog, here's a recent thread about them, Pete Croney explains the expansion joint and why SS one's don't have it....

I have an early WRX which had the 90 degree entry as standard. This was a 'home made' mod to front entry.

Neal
Thanks for the link, good stuff.

Andy....seems like you've got an awful lot of room under that manifold

Don't think i've got that kind of room to play with under mine

My manifold is raised on Ceramic and alloy spacers. You can just see them above No 2 cylinder.
It is also a different manifold from your 99/00

See them!!

Did you raise it to give you more clearance for the inlet mod?

Ceramic spacers?....reduce heat transfer to the inlet manifold?

" Ceramic spacers?....reduce heat transfer to the inlet manifold? "
Yes, that's their purpose. Really helps for drag racing where you can get a lot of heat soak between runs. Also keeps things cooler town driving, no need to wait on things cooling before giving it thrash

David - Start back 9th July, post out soon as, after that

Cool

Cool

So can you buy these ceramic spacers then?
Never heard of them being bandied about.

The insulating spacers are 'home made' from a section of 10mm plate.

There are a few more tasks to do before front entry will fit.
Remove or relocate power steering.
Re-route fuel lines in flexy pipe (David W has covered this in his FMIC thread)
Re-route coolant pipe.
Re-route breather and idle air pipes.

I previously posted some pics but they were not very good quality.
I'm sure David will be doing the other bits shortly and taking some decent pics You are going front entry David ???????

I look forward to seeing the pics, roughly how long of a job do you think it would be to complete, on a Haynes spanner rating, how difficult a task is it??

five spanners.. and yes I am going to do front entry... just not sure about straight away... will do all prep work first though..

Now wheres that abspestos (sp) gone

Would like to keep power steering aswell.. but as the alternator is in the obvious new home (relocated) May look into a nissan alternator... (I think the cabstar van has the p/steering pump on the back of the alternator...) or may try and find a car with an electric p/steering pump.

Just need to get a cheap knackered td05 now.

which coolant pipe did you move, the radiator top left hose?? the bit of metal tube that bolts to the left hand side of the block and runs under the inlet?

What have you done with breathers? vent to atmos. Rerouted or catch tank

David

I moved the small bore rigid pipe under the manifold for a bit more clearance.
All 3 breathers I have vented to atmosphere, I put some stainless steel mesh in the vertical sections of the flexy pipes to act as an oil separator. The pipes then lead down to behind the front driveshaft. Never get any oil loss or consumption. Ideally a catch tank would be a more pro' job but ££££s

Andy

Do they let you onto a drag strip without a catch can? You'd better check the regs as on sprints, hills, and circuits you'd definatly fail scruitineering.
