Default i hear noises.....

...from everywhere.
noise 1: very loud tappety sound. tappets need adjusting? if so how does one go about doing that?
noise 2: when lifting off to change gear get a slight grating, meshing noise from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd
noise 3: when i rev the engine i get a similar noise to above at 2800rpm, sound like metal on metal. sounds like coming from off-side of engine.

noises 1 and 2 only really from cold
noise 3 all the time

Guessing at what model year. 98?

1 sounds more like piston slap if its there when cold
2 sounds like the synchros on those gears are worn, and is more prominent when cold
3 sounds like a rattly exhaust shield

synchros can be expensive, depends where you go, suggest search on here for someone like api, and get a quote if its bad. Or alternatively, drop the oil from the gearbox, and put some decent oil in it Like castrol syntrax, cost of oil circa 50 - 80 quid. That sometimes sorts it. You need approx 4.5 litres (manual says 4litres, but 4.5 is better IMO)

Rattly shield, find which is rattling (lie under car, and tap the shields around engine bay area) Cure is either expensive, cheap or dead cheap. New exhaust part, weld the shield back up solid, or rip the shield off.

riping it off, any danger? found the one though, front offside close to the front of the engine.

no danger so long as all electrical wiring is out of the way.

I swore blind i had a rattle, a squeek and vibrations from the underneath of the car, to top it off I was sure there was a leak from the exhaust.

Had it up on the ramps twice and found nowt.

Yesterday, found, under the heat wrap, the header to up-pipe flange, 1 bolt was soo loose it almost fell off.

A return in performance, noise reduction, rattle and squeek free.

The moral, keep looking and get help from a mate with ramps, befriend your local garage etc.

It made my day.
