Wink Thoughts on APS cold air kit?

Thinking of getting one of these for my MY98 as I think underbonnet temps are getting a bit high. Anyone using one on a non MAF system and how does it connect up pipework wise?

How do you rate it over standard induction kit say k+N that sits in engine bay?

hi George i've got one on my linked type r so no maf, it came on the car when i bought it so i can make any direct comments. i think that its a good kit if the cars maped specifically for it though i've read somewhere on here that its no good on monster powered cars(think it was harvey)400-450+bhp because the filter was too small and you could'nt fit a big enough filter in the wing. i think the filter itself is a k&n item. i think the advtage over other induction kits is the air temps stay quite level. as for the pipe conection its just an elbow that goes from where the std airbox/filter goes, into the front wing with a suport bracket.

You can Steve. Although it would need remapped as soon as it was fitted, they don't even run well off boost with them there's such a big difference !
John Banks runs one, no maf problems.

No, they are not!
There is a group buy on the APS ones I think, they have the MAF and no MAF design, about £140 I think.

Question

Thanks for the advice

Can't seem to find any pictures of one fitted to a non maf car, all the ones I have seen have the 4 bolt flange on the end. Apart from newage kits?

Whats the effect like on non maf cars, do they need remap straight away? I think my Gems system uses charge temp?

Sorry George, forgot you had the Gems, its not such a big issue on your ECU. It may still benefit from a check/tweek.

I think it is on the Rallispec site, but they say that the stock panel filter with the resonator chamber cut away from inside the wheelarch is as good as all these specials.
If you go a bit further and blank-off the under bonnet scoop hole to the chamber, then the engine can only breath the air from the wheel arch area, through a decent panel filter, instant cold air and 30 mins + a hacksaw blade to do it. Bargain?
Ok, ok, so the flow path isn't exactly super smooth but does it really make a radical difference? (I just don't want to spend more $$ yet)

It would be very wise to get the mapping checked over to make sure that nothing significant has changed, an induction kit can make a big difference under some circumstances.

It could be and could not be! There are situations when you could cause engine damage as well (very rare). Why do not you just wait out that week to be on the safe side?

Direct Intake needs to be remapped or map checked, regardless of situation. The reason: different air volumes (MAF and non-MAF) and air speeds (for MAF), so it worth check...

Cheers,

R

Wallace performance say that the kit wont fit non maf cars. If you have one on your car without maf can you post picture to show how it is done?

Will the newage kit fit?

I had one fitted to MY00 UK Turbo just before the 300 mile drive up to see Andy F and the car was fine. Just kept it off boost all the way there. Talk about torture

End result was excellent. Combination of the APS kit, full de-cat and re-map has made a massive difference to my car - I'm well impressed.
