Oil consumption

Oil consumption
Got an '03 WRX, PPP'd. Seem to be using a bit more oil than I used to, could be a litre or so every 3000 miles lately. Mileage approaching 30k. Normal?

Both of the scoobs ive owned have never used oil (MY00 turbo and an MY03 JDM STi) both owned from new, both run in correctly (though i did run the STi in a little longer than the MY00 Turbo ).
You can put it down to 2 things, the way you drive, ie though the gears all the time ragging the car which will burn some oil, or the fact that modern engines can just burn oil, they do state that 1ltr every 1k isnt uncommon in a modern car, if your worried though id take the car to the dealers, remember though, see if the car is burning too much oil by looking out for blue smoke from the exhaust.

You may be getting what happened to me.... At about 30k I had a 'smoke incident' but the garage couldn't find anything wrong - after that I'd been increasingly adding more oil, from about a litre every 3k miles to a 1 litre per 1k miles. Eventually, at 70k (!) another friendly garage diagnosed the problem as a shot piston ring. Thankfully, even due to the miles I had covered I managed to get a new engine (short engine) and am just finishing the running in.
I was getting paranoid the other day when I saw I'd used 1/2 a litre in my 1k running in miles then was told to expect that up to the first 5k it will use it.
I would get to the dealer right away, if they don't help, go to another. Make sure you have registered this issue with them so that if later on it gets worse etc.......

Using Castrol RS10/60.
It is due for the service in a week or two so we'll see what they say.
I'd describe my driving style as 'enthusiastic', however most of the time I'm driving in rush hour so it isn't enthusiastic then! - so 'mixed' might be a better description.
My old '98 used less after 98k. I started using this oil after it was heavily recommended here. May try something thicker to compare, maybe 15/50.
Another thread here describes common heavy oil consumption, so seems to be some variation.
Bryan - you're just jealous cos you can't keep up, even if I'm just tickling the throttle....

All Greek MY03-04 WRXs drink some oil, from 200ml to 1lt per 5000km as have seen my self in many cars.
My 30K old WRX03 PPP'd uses also about 500ml per change probably due to softer piston rings from previous versions and my aggressive driving style!
Not big problem for me when all similar cars behave the same but 1lt is quite a lot consumption for 5000km!
Bear in mind if you changed recently the oil from other brand-viscosity the engine needs one more change to get used of the Castrol!

Thanks for the replies.
I'm obviously concerned and gut feeling is it's too much, as my '98 didn't use much at all between services and only began to sip it at 80-100k miles.
The difference with this one has only become obvious because I didn't have the oil changed between services (ie. at 25k) like I did at 15k. I started using RS10/60 then, at 15k, I think.
I'll post back next week after the service.
