Default 3 port boost solenoid

What exactly is this?? Im due to be having my WRX mapped to just over 300bhp, so do i need one of these?? or do i already have one?

What do they actually do?

Thanks wise techy people!

Firstly what year is your car?

Two port solenoids generally came in around 1997 replacing the 3 port.

Basically when playing about with boost levels and going for higher power it's better to use the 3 port because it gives better boost control

It switches the pressure signal to the wastegate from either atmospheric pressure or boost pressure. This means you can have as much boost as the wastegate will allow before being blown open, or you can have the minimum the wastegate will allow by feeding all the boost pressure to it.

A 2 port is unable to bleed enough off to allow the wastegate to see atmospheric pressure. It works on lower airflows and pressures through the pneumatic tubing because of a restrictor, which is necessary to allow it to get the pressure at the wastegate diaphragm down.

I remember it well mate nice to see im remembered!!! and yes....plans did change a touch getting the car mapped on the 1st, just in time for jap performance show back at the pod!! Are you going?? if so ill give you a run

I cant wait, its going to be great

P.S. its a 2003 UK car by the way !!!! so im guessing i have a 2 port....will this hold up?? i dont anticipate the boost being higher than 1.3 bar.

Excellent description John. Please excuse my technical ignorance, but I have two simple questions:

1. Would changing to an aftermarket 3-port solenoid offer any benefit to a standard car fitted with a factory 2-port solenoid (i.e. my unmodified MY99 UK car)? Specifically, would it make the car any smoother or add more mid-range torque, etc.?

2. If it would have a positive effect, what is involved in fitting one? Is it simply a case of locating and removing the in-line restrictor, or does that remain in-situ?

Cheers,

Andy

Fitting is easy - just goes on the old mounts and the plug needs minor modification. Whether the duty cycles in the ECU are correct is another matter, so really it benefits from a remap to avoid under or more likely overboost.

You can pick up used solenoids from breakers for about £30.

don't know if it was Bobs mapping or the 3 port but my 02wrx hits 1.3 the defi alarm sounds and the boost stays put, so much different to the dancing boost gauge that I used to have

Neilo

John's answer spot on

The Bugeye OEM ECU can't cope with the 3 port so it's best to fit it at the time of mapping. Bob Rawle fits them at the same time as strapping on the rest of the mapping kit

It goes with the territory

I quizzed Andy Forrest about this the other day and he responded that he wouldn't bother with one unless running > 1.2bar. Seeing as i will be having mine remapped shortly i am going to have one ready for then as a precaution.

Does Bob have premises / business or is he a sort of semi-commercial enthusiast?

John or anyone

Would it be a good idea to install an uprated fuel pump at the time of changing to the 3 port boost solenoid?

ie. Is it something that would need to be installed prior to map or doesn't the map effct the uprated fuel pump

Pete
