Default Advice needed Newbie just fitted a boost controller

Hi all!

I fitted a Blitz Dual SBC Spec S boost controller to my standard '94 import scoob at the weekend and I can say I am suitably impressed with the results...

Only problem is I am very worried about running it lean and trashing the engine!!

I dont really have too much of a clue to be fair so I might spout some rubbish so feel free to correct me

For a start I'm only running on 98 RON Optimax so not the 100 RON the car is mapped for...if I turn the boost up loads its gonna run lean and eventually knock if I turn it up that far...for starters whats the standard boost on one of these and how far can I safely take it...also I have just bought an FSE power boost valve to up the fuel pressure on the rail...will this save me from some lean running problems or have I wasted my money???

do I need bigger injectors/re-map to be safe??

any corrections to any misconceptions I may have are greatly appreciated as is any advice you have to offer

Cheers

Paul

If you are raising the boost on an import you need at the very least to

a) run octane booster ALL the time
b) fit a knocklink to monitor for det
c) fit an egt or afr gauge or at the very least get the fuelling checked using a wideband lambda

Otherwise you are taking a big risk with your engine. It may last 5 years or it may last 5 mins.

What boost are you currently running? standard is around 0.8 bar. I presume as you don't mention a fuel cut defender that you are running

What fuel pressure are you running? You certainly don't need bigger injectors or a remap yet.

I was thinking octane booster would be a good plan do you reckon Millers or something similar??

How much will a knocklink set me back and where can I get one and can I fit it myself??

pls help me out with egt or afr I dont know what you are talking about?!

Standard boost is indicated at about 0.6 bar on this gauge and I can boost it up to 1.33 but the fuel defender cuts in!! so I turned it down to about 1 bar and it seems fine at this...

apparently the FSE power boost valve will take the pressure from 1 bar to 1.7

any further advice is much appreciated

cheers

Yes, octane booster is a good idea. I use Millers and rate it very highly.

For knocklink check out www.jap-innovations.co.uk

EGT is exhaust gas temp and AFR is air/fuel ratio. Both are ways of indicating if the car is leaning out.

Standard boost should be 0.8 bar, not 0.6.

1.33 is a little high and without booster you are taking a big risk running this kind of boost on an import. Is this boost measured from your gauge or the boost controller itself?

Re the FSE valve, crossed wires there. It's response that is 1.7 times faster.

If you were running 1 or 1.7 bar pressure, you car would have blown up long ago.

Standard pressure is around 2.6 bar with the vac connected, so you need to find out what pressure the thing is set too. You should have had a gauge with the unit to set it up when you fitted it.

boost is measured on the boost controller I havent got a separate boost gauge as yet...

I thought the power boost valve increased the fuel pressure in the fuel rail?! ah well...

I havent fitted the FSE yet that is this weekends job!

I'll check out the knocklink etc and get one ordered

cheers

Yes it does. That's the whole point of it. But the pressure should be at least 3.0 bar at idle with the vac connected, not 1.7. otherwise you are better off with the OEM one.

When you install the FSE gauge you need to set the fuel pressure up precisely. You can't just fit it and hope for the best.

Check out the website link I've given you above for exhausts.
