Just read in Jap performance that a 6 speed box can take 600Bhp and is bullet proof. Is this so??

Fire a gun at it and see, seriously though it won't be power that kills it, I am advised it should take 800 Nm of torque which is a "better" benchmark.

About 280-300 lbft?

Note how Prodrive run less torque on the PPP than they could....

The STi six speed is reputedly a totally new design, the ancestry of the 5MT is impressive in length but not on pedigree.

The six speed has a much stronger case and a huge brace inside made from a plate of hard very thick steel to carry the main shaft.

Less case flex, less shaft flex = less broken gears.

It also has an internal oil pump - but you pay in terms of weight - they are VERY heavy!

Steve,

not necessarily - depends how cheap you can get the 6sp box for - but many I have seen cost more than my gearset - although I did have to pay for the build...

You might find it tricky to get a good 6MT for that of known origin, the right front diff, the linkage and propshaft, and rear diff if a JDM. If so snap it up

Maybe - but how often do they require a rebuild!! at that sort of power I doubt they would stay good as gold for long!!

Steve, i believe the jun car has done over 100 full bore launches on their 6 speed, whereas the 5 speed lasted 3 launches.

RCM had uprated driveshafts in stock the last time I was there so they may be worth a call.

Jun 6speed uses their own gear kit though.

6speed used in one of Rigoli's project cars, std 6 speed, has done a 10.8 or 10.9 and is still lasting. Not been rebuilt.

6speed, linkage, prop and rear diff now your looking atleast £1600 upwards
