600Bhp from a 6 Speed???

Just read in Jap performance that a 6 speed box can take 600Bhp and is bullet proof. Is this so??

Bob Rawle 05 August 2004 05:47 PM

Fire a gun at it and see, seriously though it won't be power that kills it, I am advised it should take 800 Nm of torque which is a "better" benchmark.

What's that in real money lbs/ft?

coulty 05 August 2004 07:31 PM

590 lbs/ft :)

Neilo 05 August 2004 07:42 PM

does anybody have any REAL (ish) figures of what a WRX box can take??

john banks 05 August 2004 07:47 PM

About 280-300 lbft?

Note how Prodrive run less torque on the PPP than they could....

Neilo 05 August 2004 09:48 PM

thats what i thought, well, 300lb ft. I wonder why the STI box is almost 100% stronger still???? seems bizarre....

Fangoria 05 August 2004 10:03 PM

Neil

You pay for what you get - wrx = Nova Brigade quality

I dont care I have and sti as well... greedy me :p

Neilo 05 August 2004 10:21 PM

ouch!! id like to see a nova handle 300lbft.....

john banks 05 August 2004 10:26 PM

The STi six speed is reputedly a totally new design, the ancestry of the 5MT is impressive in length but not on pedigree.

Trout 05 August 2004 11:24 PM

The six speed has a much stronger case and a huge brace inside made from a plate of hard very thick steel to carry the main shaft.

Less case flex, less shaft flex = less broken gears.

It also has an internal oil pump - but you pay in terms of weight - they are VERY heavy!

But a damn site cheaper than a/market!! - plus user friendly - yipeee.........a nice addition to my 2+liter engine (when I get one!!)

Trout 06 August 2004 06:55 PM

Steve,

not necessarily - depends how cheap you can get the 6sp box for - but many I have seen cost more than my gearset - although I did have to pay for the build...

Whats a reasonable price for a 6MT then........

Thought a Par was about £1800 plus.......................... (about £2.5k all in)I've seen the 6mt's at £1200......ish

john banks 07 August 2004 05:00 PM

You might find it tricky to get a good 6MT for that of known origin, the right front diff, the linkage and propshaft, and rear diff if a JDM. If so snap it up :)

Fangoria 07 August 2004 05:08 PM

John

Yeah maybe your right - I know you can pick up all the kit mentioned for circa £1500 though................

P20SPD 08 August 2004 08:03 AM

Not now you cant Steve, prices just seem to keep going up.

Fangoria 08 August 2004 10:08 AM

Damn..................

Second hand 5mt's it is then and a budget for rebuilds!!

97 rExy 08 August 2004 01:23 PM

Rigolli's run 10s on 6 speed STi with similar hp or >.
Good as gold.

Fangoria 08 August 2004 04:21 PM

Maybe - but how often do they require a rebuild!! at that sort of power I doubt they would stay good as gold for long!!

P20SPD 08 August 2004 05:43 PM

Steve, i believe the jun car has done over 100 full bore launches on their 6 speed, whereas the 5 speed lasted 3 launches.

Bob Rawle 08 August 2004 05:57 PM

The box isn't a problem but beware of std drive shafts !!!

bob

DaveBlueRA 08 August 2004 06:00 PM

Is there anywhere that does uprated driveshafts, not heard of anywhere.

callum Sti02 08 August 2004 11:08 PM

RCM had uprated driveshafts in stock the last time I was there so they may be worth a call.

M0NEY 09 August 2004 09:43 PM

Jun 6speed uses their own gear kit though.

6speed used in one of Rigoli's project cars, std 6 speed, has done a 10.8 or 10.9 and is still lasting. Not been rebuilt.

6speed, linkage, prop and rear diff now your looking atleast £1600 upwards
