Before I Start Buying the Bits - My Plan, Please Check
I'm not entirely clued up on tuning the EJ20 but from what i've gathered from those i've talked to and picked up from here i have devised a small plan - which is as follows:
Car is MY98 UK PPP with H&S decat d/p + centre, MY99 WRX EJ20.
260bhp @ Star RR.
My aim is for 310-320bhp.
The shopping list:
FETD05 (provisionally bought)
Phase 1 440cc Injectors
Walboro Fuel Pump + FPR
STi V4 Intercooler
Apexi Power FC mapped by Andy Forrest
I was hoping to steer clear of a front mount on this round of mods (for cost reasons) but i gather this may be the limiting factor in the above plan? But will it limit me to below 310-320bhp?
I'm also aware of the dirt cheap Gruppe S headers available atm but am firmly on a budget and don't want to spend in areas i'm not going to benefit from. Unless anyone can convince me they'll make a difference on a (relatively) mildly tuned car?
Ta,
Carl

headers WILL help you further up the rev range..
you might have seen this already BUT anyway..

nowt like hitting 5K and letting the headers let rip

in that case, i'll say it simple bud
headers before ic and defo not an sti ic. the way i see it and have been told countless times, unless it's a newage sti ic, then it ain't worth it. they are no bigger than maybe the older version gc8's, so you can spend the money on some headers

What ever you do for as long as you keep the MY98 top mount intercooler either Eurospec or STi you will be very limited as that intercooler is almost as bad as the MY92-96 one, suggest you try get hold of an STi5/6 item which can be shoehorned in with a mod to the dump valve outlet in the form of an adaptor. That intercooler is far better and would support your objectives, there is no substitute for a front mount though.

Sorry to thread hijack slightly but I've got an MY00 and am planning about the same target figure as Carl Davey. Basically want to be able to go to the most pessimistic rolling road and get 300/300.
However, I've heard that a TD05 mated to say a Hybrid FMIC will make the car quite laggy. I'd like to build in as much safety as possible so don't want anything stretched to its limits. My plan was this:-
Currently
Full De-cat
K&N Panel
ECUTEK 2
Planned but undecided:-
TD05 or VF28 (VF28 low spooling?)
Hybrid FMIC (don't really want to carve up bumper so perhaps STi V5/6)
550 injectors with uprated fueling/reg'
Sort the ECUTEK 2 to 3 to allow custom map or junk ECUTEK for MAP based Power FC.
Don't want to go over 300/300 as the 'box won't hold (cap'n!)

Home now.
Thanks for the words guys. I never thought i'd ever say it but i want to stick with a top mount for the time being. I'm on a budget and really want to make the Apexi the only large expense... If a late classic STi TMIC will take me over 310 then i'll be more than delighted with that. Thanks Bob.
I will avoid the headers for the time being also if lag is an issue. Sorry Chrome.

No worries Carl, the new age STi intercoioler IS better than the STi5/6 but they are not cheap and you need to incurr more cost than just the purchase to make effective use of it ie bonnet scoop change/mod etc. plus rearrangement of underbonnet things to accomodate.
Dave my comments on this were specifically driven by Carls statement re keeping cost down.
Remap of factory ecu will more than accomodate your needs here without going aftermarket.
cheers

Carl.. if you do go for a later Sti5/6 tmic, i have an adaptor from H&S that goes on the front, to allow the 97/98 dv to fit on.
I had planned for an Sti5/6 tmic for my own 98 car, but went fmic instead.

Bob, thanks for expanding a little more. I have no reservations now going for an STi TM and will do my best to get my hands on a V5/6 one. The new
-age ones sound as though they're a little more troublesome to fit than i'd ideally like.
Johnny, that would be absolutely brilliant mate! I'll make the IC top of my list of priorities (after the turbo Dave ) so i can get back to you on it asap.
