'Fantasy engine build' time...
Been umming and aahing about the prospect of having soem internal work done on my engine in the not too distant future..
Now, I dont claim to know jack **** when it comes to engine's- so hopefully the usual suspects can help advise and/or take the p1ss as per usual
so: The block is UK MY00
Car is running well above standard power and torque (300+) , and looking now to investigate 'bullet proofing' the engine itself as everything else has pretty much been modded quite far.. (apart from Gbox and Diffs)
running 1.35 bar tapering off to 1.2 @ 7Krpm (LINK ECU)
Would like to run a touch more boost (1.5 perhaps @ peak power?)

The car ran a 12.8 1/4 at the recent shootout (I reckon low 12's are within reach if I sort my launch technique out) ET of 96mph though (rubbish 60ft time)
'Flyer' (mile and a 1/4) of 143.9mph
The 'weakest links' IMO are the Engine itself and Gearbox (and driver ).
Curious to hear people's thoughts... bit concerned the block may be living on borrowed time..
So:
1: If I had to stick to 2L what would your recommendations be for maximum strength/reliability?
Which pistons? Rods? rings? etc..
CDB or SemiCDB?
(Uk is obviously OBD)
2: Ditto number 1 but now looking at perhaps a stroker kit? 2.2? /2.33?
2: Ditto number 2 but now looking at 2.5 options
(way more expensive I know- but nice to have a plan 'just in case')
Power wise- Theoretical target of 450/450 +

IMHO, stick to 360-380 BHP max and fit a six speed when the box breaks.
Seriously consider the added value to spending thousands upon thousands on an engine rebuild and the supporting kit. If you must have 450 BHP (and I am similarly afflicted) then get the wallet out for a serious hammering.
IMHO a 2.0 running 360-380 is going to be more reliable than a built motor with the power ambitions and effects on the rest of the car that go with it.

I remember a post by John saying he'd wished he'd stayed at 260 BHP but then there's inflation for you Chrome, stick to reasonable power levels or prepare to be seriously poor.

so a stnd 2.0l block should be able to handle 360-380?
my goal is 2 settings using the AVC-R
1) 360-380 on most powerfull setting
2) 330-350 for trackuse
I already have a STIbox on it and brakes
so this should be ok then?
(no need for rods or pistons....?)

Isn't there a 'proven' (popular?) formula to do this now?
The magic 350+ mark has been chased by many with success, and is a personal goal for Xmas and hill climb season next year.
I believe it goes like this:
2.0L Sti open or closed block engine base, v3 or later.
Gruppe S headers, wrapped and a H&S slipper up pipe of small (stock) diameter.
Decat system.
Andy F hybrid turbo
550cc injectors, maybe a bit bigger. (Sti v3 has 440cc)
255 fuel pump
Good panel filter
GEMS Rally ecu with a good mapping by Steve Simpson.
Front mount intercooler if over 350bhp, Sti tmic for 350 max.
6 speed with 240mm AP organic trans.
All this will do it, will still weaken your wallet to despair, but that factor is a relative condition to your predicament!
Best bit is all this can be DIY except for the mapping = savings!
And you can sell off the old bits too.

Chrome, for your Option 1 - It doesn't even need to be an Sti base, a number of early WRX's (same internals as UK) have breached the 400 bhp mark reliably on std internals. Don't think any of them were using a GEMS ECU though ! Link and Apexi were the preferred flavours

2.0 or 2.2 engine, with sti heads for a revvy companion to a close ratio 6 speed box, or even an sti box.
or 2.5 EJ257 bog standard with UK heads, 7000rpm limit, medium turbo on uprated 5 speed or 6 speed box.
stick to 400hp limit to save your wallet, both packages can be setup to give nice wide power band.
Extra money required to make the most of the 2.5, although short engine initially cheaper. If going option 2.0 - 2.2, I wouldn't worry about closed deck block too much, keep the torque down a little and let the bugger rev.
