Default Sound of running water while idling/driving slowly

Hi All,

Only had my MY98 UK turbo for a couple of months so this may be completely normal, but...

does anyone else get a kind of running water sound when the engine is idling? It kind of sounds like it's bubbling and the bubbling seems to quicken if you rev.. I can hear it if I'm sitting in the car, but not really when the bonnet's up. Wierd!

Getting a bit concerned that a large bill could be on it's way!!
The car does have a/c. Could that be anything to do with it..

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

My '97 makes a trickling sound from behind the centre of the dash when you need to top up the coolant - check the level in your header tank.

Almost sure it's air in the coolant. Have the same problem with mine. MY98 UK turbo (with SAMCO hoses).
Bleeding it should do the trick (for a while anyway)

Cheers all! Yep, it was the coolant level! The noise has now gone, but I think I've got a leak...

What makes you think you have a leak ? If it has dropped again since you topped it up it will most likely just be the air bubbles you could hear all getting out to the header tank. After mine had been low it took more fluid on 2 evenings after the first top up to get it to a point where it was stable. Fill it up, drive the car until it reaches normal operating temp and the full cooling sytem comes into operation, let it cool, top it up, repeat until stable. Even at that it can drop slowly anyway without there being an actual leak as such, just due to the pressure when it gets very hot pushing some out of the overflow and suchlike. Provided the oil level isn't going up as the coolant goes down you shouldn't have too much of a problem !

Coolant runs into the heater matrix behind the dash. Usu the heater matrix cracks slightly allowing air to enter, hence the bubbling sound. As it gets worse, you may be able to find coolant leaking into the passenger footwell.

If you don't need the heater, you can just "short circuit" it by removing the coolant lines that run into it. These can be seen from the left side of the car, behind the intercooler. There're the only 2 thickish rubber lines entering the firewall.
