Sometimes i think the 'cut-off' of features like CD blocks where not that well defined. If engines were around they were used. How do you know that it is a closed deck?
I have an Stiv3 so I'm interested too.
I havn't seen any info that gives a serial number or some well defined feature etc on the engine to prove it.

Pavlo, shes a 1997 if thats any use?
John, cheers for that
911, I personaly know only a little about these cars, but I had two of the best in the business take a look and under 'pen torch light' they were able to identify it as a closed deck engine, much to mine and my brothers suprise!
When I find out more I will update here.
Anyone got anything further to add?
Cheers

How to tell if its a CDB
You can tell if it is a closed deck block without opening the engine up.
If you get a torch, and from underneath the car, try and look behind the up-pipe if you see a grid pattern cast into the block casting then it’s a closed deck block - if there isnt one its not.
As people have said it was a factory option and could have been specified by the customer or the engine could have been built and just fitted at the factory to stop it going to waste.
Hope this helps

Question time, have seen "closed deck block" written many times, but what is it? I've inferred that it is in some manner a stronger block, but what makes it stronger I don't know. I would do a search but SN3 hasn't got search up and running yet
Can anyone explain, ideally with a few pics ??

Haven’t got any pics but essentially a closed deck block is stronger because there is more metal between the barrels and the water ways (simplistic I know). This stops the barrels moving which helps stop things like head gaskets failing etc. The downside to this is they are harder to produce and so cost more – which I guess is why they stopped fitting them as standard.
I think Dave Wallis or Adam M had some pics but I could be wrong.
