If not MAF, what else?
#1
Towards the end of a spirited drive back from Norfolk on Sunday my MY98 suddenly started misbehaving. Everything was fine until I slowed through a village, then on putting the power back on, nothing above 3000rpm - just as though the rev limiter comes in but more violently. Its not always the same revs either, sometimes 2800, sometimes up to 3400 (the harder the acceleration, the lower the cut-out). Tried cleaning the MAF, but makes no difference. What else can it be? No Check Engine light.

It may have gone into limp home mode. I've had this happen on a new age wrx, I don't remember if the check engine light came on..it then cleared itself after turning the ignition on and off. Did your engine light come on...also it may have been the ignition timing going to maximum retardation...had that happen once on my MY98, if you had a boost gauge it probably would have showed about 0.5bar...best thing to do is back off and it should sort itself out over 30 mins or so unless its something else. How hard were you caning it (mine only happened once on country lanes with constant power on/off and bouncing off the rev limiter, I think it was mainly down to heat soak!) and is it modified and were you using super unleaded??!!

just re-read your post...sounds like typical overboost..probably happens more in the higher gears 4th and 5th too. It's not a serious problem (unless you're trying to overtake) take it to your dealer and let them sort it. It's the fuel cut coming in to prevent the car boosting over 1.2bar.

Classic overboost symptoms. Has it been serviced recently?
Try cleaning the pipes from the manifold to the sensors (between airbox and suspension turret) and the inside of the sensors themselves.
Much discussed topic, a search will reveal all.

Thanks Nito & Pete - will try cleaning the pipes at the w/end. Yes, it is due for a service, and it has a T75 downpipe and phase 1 ECU. The cut-out comes in earlier (2800) with foot down, but can be pursuaded up to 3400 with very gentle acceleration. I kind of assumed that overboost would just reduce power and not cut the fuel. Problem is now permanent, ie doesn't come & go. And no check engine & no fault code reported. How do I clean the pipes? They're pretty small bore from memory.

Graham,
I had this when my MAF failed. The check engine light did not illuminate until a select monitor was plugged into it.
