Guys,

You've all been very helpful in the past & i'm hoping for a resolution to this problem. I had a new clutch fitted to my car which has probably now done about 3000 miles but just recently if I try & change into second at high revs it's like trying to change without hardly depressing the clutch. Now when I had the clutch fitted they said it might need bleeding after a while - could this be the problem?

I asked another mate if he reackons the clutch needs adjusting but he told me that the clutch adjusts automatically so that idea was out of the equation.

The only other suggestion I have had that doesn't sound cheap is that the syncromesh (haven't got a clue if that is spelt right) is going!!!!!!!!! He reackons that if that is the case the gearbox will need taking appart??!!??

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it the syncromesh? If so how much will it cost to repair?

This is on MY95 UK Turbo.

Any help appreciated.

I'm afraid its your box. You'll be super lucky if its just oil, better start saving up.

I had all but reverse gears changed in the box whilst having a clutch done, i think the the job cost about £400, with clutch £750, but you'll have to add labour to take your box out. I had the clutch done at 24hr clutches and they sent the box off to Tameside transmisions.
Cant remember exactly but had box whine and I think it did crunch in 2nd not sure tho.

Hi Maffa hows the seats? you could always take a trip to Scoobysport and let them have a look it will only cost you petrol money and if they do recomend a box they can get you one at a good price.

Suprised you can hear the CRUNCH over the sound of your exhaust

I take it I'm the mate who sugested the adjustment/syncro.(As you don't have any others)

Was fine when I drove it. Maybe I should have another go. (Full throtle gear changes don't do it any good)

Change the gear oil and see. If you want a hand give me a shout.

Had a M***o Gti box rebuilt, cost £400. Took 3 days though.

Iain.

Alright sam long time no hear. Seats are great, much better than that Granny cloth stuff I had in there before & much more sporty. Got a K&N & a Scoobymania exhaust on there now.

Iain it was you who said about the auto adjusting clutch & it was Col who said about the syncromesh. Brian's mate is going to take a look at it before I go spending silly money.

Thomo if the problem is the box I will only need a box as my clutch has only done about 3,000 miles. Isn't £900 a bit steep?? Surely only some parts will need replacing??

I had a bit of a crunch going into 5th gear during b@lls out gearchanges. It wasn't a serious CRUNCH but you felt it through the gearknob. It felt like you were almost beating the synchro, only at high speed quick changes.
I only noticed it after about 2500 miles as I had been pretty careful running the car in.
The oil level wasn't low but I had it changed and hey presto no crunch, no matter how hard I try.
It's certainly well worth trying an oil change before you have the 'box out and spend a small fortune.

get the gear box oil changed to the correct oil. I know its not a scooby but the car i had before ( peugeot 205 1.9 gti) had the wrong oil in after a drive shaft came out during a service and it made a hell of a lot of difference especialy when cold.

i would try bleeding the clutch before anything cos its real cheap, then go with the box oil. with a new cluch the slave(clutch end) cylinder has to push out slightly further which if there is any air present wont happen .(similar to air in brake systems only not as dangerous)
there was an extensive thread on box oil a little while back ,try the search.
ps i do speak from experience but i wont tell you on what car.
all the best
